Figuring type A and B’s Topic

My team is underperforming, I'm thinking about making room for some of my younger guys, before I do something stupid is there a way to tell or approximate the chances of a fa getting these designations?

Type As have overall ratings that are in the top 20% of all players in their position groups in the majors. Type Bs are in the 20-40th percentile. Position groups are

C
1B/OF/DH
2B/3B/SS
SP
RP

In practical terms, an overall of 70 is usually enough to ensure Type B, while 74+ is usually a Type A. There can, however, be quite a bit of variation depending on the world.

Outstanding, thank you

jdbkaput, what about relief pitchers? I'd assume you'd drop their overall rating when looking at whether their a type A/B guy?

What about this guy I just picked up for the stretch run? Could he be a type B?

Factor in the position groupings when looking at the OVR's. Your 65-OVR Sanchez might make it as a Type B. A 74-OVR SP or 2B/3B/SS is going to have a tougher time getting an A or even B designation. The 1B/OF/DH type A and B group tends to be dominated by CF's - if there are a lot of 75 to 80+ OVR CF's in your world, they might squeeze some very good 1B's and DH's out of A and B status.

Thanks,

I figured he was a fringe Type B, wouldn't mind picking up a draft pick for him next season.

Agree with blanch13 to a point. I should've mentioned the major outliers, with RP on the low side (I had a 65 overall RP become a Type B recently) and SSs on the high.

As for SP, I don't see very many 70-72 SPs who aren't Type Bs due to their sizable population within the game. Whereas a flukish population of outstanding shortstops might lead a 75 overall SS dropping to Type B status, pitchers tend to be a little steadier with respect to population dynamics. It's by no means ironclad, but in my experience you won't go wrong betting on a 70-73 to be a Type B, while 74+ is good for Type A.

How does age factor in?

We just finished free agency in one World, and several 78 overalls received Type A compensation, even a 73 overall SP yielded Type B compensation, but another 78 overall started, who is 38 years old, yielded nothing.

Any ideas?

Age does not matter.

Things to consider. The position listed is not the position that matters, its the position that WIS thinks the player should be playing, best guess for that in my opinion would be the REC.

A 70 overall rated 2b or SS will almost surely not get you compensation while a 70 overall rated catcher will probably be type A compensation. So overall ratings in comparison to positions is what matters.

Overall ratings compared to positions is in my opinion the deciding factor. Age plays zero in the process.

Thanks for your opinion plague, but please explain then why the 73-rated SP received Type B compensation and the 78-rated 38 year old received nothing. I would love to hear what others think as well.

Check to see if your 78 OVR guy was released or had an option declined by his original team.

Ah, declined option. That explains it. Thanks carnivore.
