I have a guy scheduled to start but I want to bump him out of the rotation because I just got a guy in a trade.

He has 1 option , if I demote him can I call him right back up immediately?

Are there any other loop holes to changing the rotation?

put him as the first of a pair of tandem starters. Set his pitch count to 5/5. Set the guy you want to start as the B starter in the tandem and give him a normal starter's pitch count. The guy you dont want will pitch to the first batter, then your other guy will come in.

10 game days before he can come back.

At the risk of getting flamed by MikeT (like I care), here's a slight variation of csherwood's suggestion for you to consider.

Rather than setting the current starter to a pitch count of 5/5, set him to a pitch count of none/none with a call bullpen rating of 5. If he's "on" for the game, he may give you a couple of quality innings but will get yanked at the first sign of trouble.

I did this once and got a surprisingly excellent start of seven inning, one hit shutout ball from the starter I would have otherwise scratched.

Good suggestion.

One variation to this is to let your opponent know if in your case you'll have a y starting and a righty coming in, or visa versa.

I had this same instance happen and made sure to inform my opponent as it's just a nice thing to do.

I wouldn't tell him. Screw 'em. he can look and see your guys are listed as a tandem and take his risks. Nothing prevents managers in major league baseball from changing pitchers after 1 batter other than hurting the precious psyche of their starting pitchers.

Eh, this would definitely be frowned upon in the majors as well. Yes it would be smart strategy, but it seriously straddles the line of poor sportsmanship. It's one thing if the guy is listed as a tandem starter 3 or 4 hours before game time, but if you switch it 10 minutes before the game, I think you need to at least send the guy a private message.

I am actually seriously considering using this strategy going forward. I will place a ie as my Tandem A, 5 pitch count, and a rightie as B, or vice versa. Thus, I gain a distinct advantage over any player that has different lineups vs L and vs R pitchers.

You should do that, quitterwood.

Oh. Yes, of course. Thank you.
