High power but low L/R splits Topic

OK - brand new to this game.

Is this guy completely useless?

Contact - 53

Power - 98

v L - 29

v R - 33

Eye - 58

Between HiA and AA he hit 65 hr's one season and in AAA he hit 54, but will his splits prevent him from ever doing anything on the big league level?

I once had a guy with similar-ish ratings. 41 contact, 96 power, 20 vs. ies, 47 vs. righties, 46 eye. In 204 at-bats that season, he hit .230 with 10 home runs. In 2 ML seasons (including the previous one where his ratings were comparable but slightly worse since he was young) he hit 24 homers in 475 at-bats with a .219 batting average. That said, keep in mind also that a big update was just made to further reduce the home run potential of high power guys-- I don't know if that would affect someone with such low splits, but the point is, a guy with those ratings isn't really worth a whole lot regardless.

I have a 59/99/43/38/79 that OPS'ed .860 (with 42 HR avg) in two full seasons ... but with the curbing of top end power, he's back in AAA this season after OPSing .612 for 28 games

your guy's splits (and especially eye) are worse than my guy's ... your guy could hit 30 HRs, but will lucky to be over .240/.300 in AVG/OBP

I had a guy who was 59/72 48/28 4. He hit .202 with 5 HRs in 119 ABs (.387 SLG) before I sent him back to AAA. I traded him the following season.

I could see that guy OPS'ing about .800, but, as mentioned, with an OBP that will struggle to break .300.

I have a 50--96--37--17--84 guy who I've used in a platoon against ies and he has an .859 OPS with a .332 OBP in ~900 ML at bats. He's extremely comparable to your guy, but with a much better batting eye which will give him a significant edge in OBP.

He would be a good player if he can play SS or CF, useful if he could play 2B or C, worth a roster spot at 3B or as an outstanding COF (like a 70/70 range/glove) but as a DH/1B/LF-type, he's nothing more than a bench bat to keep around for his 3-4 pre-arb years and then let go.

Bottom line though, he's definitely not completely useless, just don't expect too much out of him.

I have a guy 43-95-46-47-32

The last 4 years before this one he hit 60-59-45-61 HRs. That is at the ML level.

His splits are pretty bad, but what scares me most is his average batting eye to go along with his other deficiencies.

If he's an above-average defender at a premium position (SS, CF, 2B, C) and you can bat him at sixth or below, then he could be worth a roster spot. But if he's going to be playing a corner position or needed in the meat of the lineup, you're going to be very disappointed in the number of outs he creates.

travis has a good point. The other thing to look at of course is context. Your guy would produce decently in one of the two worlds I'm in, but I would hesitate to carry him at all in the other. You should look around at other worlds and compare how similar rated players play in various pitching/park contexts.

Agree. There are lots of guys with that look to their ratings, but the ones that hit enough to play an ML corner have BE~80 and splits in the 40s. And after the last update I'm not sure even those guys will pay off.

I have a guy just like that. Almost identical offensive ratings. Tony Hyun

He found his way in to my lineup for his defense. Always managed to hit big time home runs in the playoffs.

Not sure how the new update will effect a player like this though...

Leo Van Poppel has almost identical ratings, and has been VERY acceptable at 1B for me.

so seems like a .240 avg and .300 OBP with some good HR potential is about what I can expect. I was nervous as I know it is a very small sample size but he started off the year 0 for 20 with 8 K's and 1 walk, but finally got off the snide last night with a HR plus a walk and run scored - thanks for the feedback.

This is good information. Im about to start my first season and have just signed a guy to be my DH vs RHP. his hitting line goes as follows:

contact 25

power 95

vs LHP 36

vs RHP 59

batting eye 86

I figured him to be a right handed Jim Thome. Ideally late 90s not late 00s Thome.

What do you guys think?

Too many strikeouts; even platooned he'll hit .220-.230, and .230/.320/.480 is disappointing at DH.

I got a guy in a neutral park with

Contact - 21
Power - 98
vs LHP - 39
vs RHP - 54
Eye - 90

almost 700 career MLB AB's

.282/.360/.621 for a .981 OPS with 68 HR's, 169 strikeouts

I think he may be playing a bit over his head but he's very similar to the guy coachgus posted...
