The senior slump - turnover edition Topic

Okay, I've never been a believer of the senior G slump. I've always been able to rationalize and prove that any senior guard I've had has had some deficiency. But now I'm stumped.

Can someone explain to me why these two players are both averaging more TOs and shooting significantly worse than they did as juniors?

Here's the team:

Now, I understand that it's a small sample size. I also understand that Friedrich is shooting better from 3, although he has been awful from inside the arc. My real question is about their TOs. I've played some good teams, but should that really explain over 7 turnovers a game from my top three guards, one of whom is 90+ in bh and pass?

more time with the ball = more opportunities to turn the ball over.

Both players are averaging nearly 10 shots per game this season, as opposed to less than 8 last season.

Friedrich has about a 2/1 AST/TO ratio, that is really good, especially for HD.

Also, take away his game against S. NH (which is a very good team), and he has 24 AST and 9 TOs in 5 games!!!

Their scoring PPG is up.

Scientifically speaking, they're cursed.

more distribution = lower FG% and more TOs. They have to shoot the ball when there is 5 seconds on the shot clock, have to bring it up vs. the press more compared to last year when your seniors then had that responsibility.

Plus the small sample size.

Thanks guys.

hbmerlin - good point.

reinsel and tanner - they isn't a marked difference in the distro from last season. Maybe slightly more, but it depends on the game/defense. Also, reinsel, they have been starting since their sophomore year, and have had essentially the same distro % for the past two seasons.

But I think hbmerlin is right. They aren't playing well, but it's not as bad as I had originally thought after a quick glance.

Well, they don't have a different distribution, but what about the people they are playing with? How much has your lineup changed? Distribution is a relative thing, not an absolute one.

I know, their distro percentages are almost the same. It's tough to say with any certainty because I change it depending on the defense, but it shouldn't be more than a couple % points difference. Also, Butler is the PG and has always had a significant distro, so he should be handling the ball on most plays anyway, right?

One other thing to offer in the case of Butler: While he's certainly a good player, I'd submit that he overachieved last season (51% fg and 46% from 3pt is fantastic), so to see him come down a bit from that would just be regression to the mean, as far as I'm concerned.

But alot of what others have brought up (sample size is really key, distro, etc.) all apply. I don't really think there's much you can look at in HD after six games and draw truly meaningful conclusions from it.

Absolutely, dalter, two very good points. Not sure Butler overacheived all that much, only because teams often play (-2) or lower against me because of my rebounding advantages, but I agree, he's not the best player ever.

I've done this a couple of times now (brought something to the forum early in the season). Generally, it's to nip something in the bud if I'm doing something wrong. I've been fairly successful during my short time in this game, but I know nothing compared to some of you. This way, I don't have to lose half a season if I'm overlooking something obvious. If I challenge, the advice, it's not to be an ***, it's just to get a good dialogue going so someone can change my mind (not something easliy done!).

Again, thanks for all of the advice!

ALso, on Butler, outside of two games (The 4 - 14 and the 2 - 8) His shooting hasn't been that bad.

Yeah, a, good point.

It does seem after reading what you guys have had to say, that I am just overreacting a bit.

I'm still a little annoyed by Butler's TOs. He took 8 shots, all threes, yesterday and still managed four TOs.

It also wouldn't be shocking if later he went through a period where he had barely any turnovers, while someone else struggles. It does happen.

Also true. And he very well might, there are only five humans in the conference and the sims aren't good.
