looking for back up/defensive replacement type guy.....their pretty even in terms of their defensive ability, but when they get to the plate....who will help me most/hurt me the least??

Thanks for any help.

Huang. Both have excellent bats for a d-specialist. Huang's is pretty solid for a starting SS.

thanks Gjello....

Let's throw this guy into the mix.....

now who starts as my ML SS?

Huang starts for me.

who's the backup then---Furcal or Oropesa??........keeping in mind last year Oropesa struggled at the plate in AAA in hitter friendly park and Furcal was pretty decent at the plate in ML in neutral park....

Furcal by a nose. But Oropresa is a darned good d-spec as well. I'd put both Furcal and Oropresa on the market, and trade whichever got the better offer, being comfortable with either as my d-spec. I could see another owner viewing either as a starting SS under the right circumstances, so you might get a nice return on either.

You are generally safer trusting the ratings rather than the stats. Some players seem to magically outperform their ratings, but usually the guy with the better ratings is the one who will perform best in the long run.

The reason Furcal hit well last year is that he started vsL and only played as a d-sub vsR. I would expect them to hit to a similar OPS at the ML level if they were to be full-time starters, with Oropresa having the better OBP but Furcal with more Slugging. Furcal offers the advantage of being able to maximize his effectiveness by being solid vsL. However, Oropresa will be less of a total cypher at the plate vsR should Huang go down for an extended period.

Furcal is the back-up to Huang, and I'd even consider a platoon. Or do what gjello says and trade the back-up that gets you the most value.

great info....thx....

Huang then Oropresa.

But Huang will be a very nice MLB ss.

UPDATE: Huang has been terrible at the plate......Furcal knocking the cover off the ball against ies.....and better v righties than Huang....

I would have said Huang also. I now prefer defensive SS's over offensive. When you can find a good defensive SS and a decent offensive player at short. Its like you have struck gold

Uh, thanks for the update. Huang's 49 at bats are very convincing evidence. Not to mention the AVALANCHE of evidence in Furcal's 119 at bats.

sox...that made me laugh (don't think that was your intention).....certainly the evidence is lacking........will get back to this at the all star break...
