Does slowdown eqaulize TOO much? Topic

I'm just looking at tonights Iba conference quarters and I'm seeing alot of big upsets by teams running slowdown. Seen it in a few of my games in other worlds as well. Is it just me or is it turning out more upsets (and some by impressive margins against good teams) than you'd expect?

soon, soon the slowdown **** will die, it begins May 12th at a world near you.

JUst a question: What are you considering a big upset?

25 rpi vs 220 rpi

What will the new world do to stop the slowdown, I didn't see anything about how that will change?

Well, closer than that, but these are the ones I noticed last night, mostly in the Big 6 +A10. These are the RPI's AFTER the upsets.

138 vs 23

130 vs 11

107 v 8

140 v 20

116 v 13

113 v 4

To be clear, upsets should happen, I just thought this was an interesting night on the whole.

I think the highest level of D1 are bad examples because even with the big RPI gaps the talent gaps between the teams are usually nowhere near as big as the RPI difference indicates.

Yes, plenty of threads have looked at this before. Slowdown reduces tempo (# of possessions) way below anything ever seen in real life D1 since the shot clock. A team running slowdown all season will average a number of possessions several standard deviations below the NCAA average, and lower than any real-life D1 team.

Hence, it increases the variance of outcomes by much more than what is seen in real-life D1.

I just know personally if 75% of the teams I play didn't run press, I wouldn't run slowdown all year. Its great having my top players average 8 pts in 45-35 debacles. Just my little soapbox rant.

I prefer to run fast paced against the press (on my non fb teams as well). My theory is I'd prefer taking the 1st open look against a trapping defense than continue passing it around just waiting for a turnover to happen.

Slow down is too effective in the current engine, it cuts the number of possesions a game down 15+. The new engine fixes it.

5 of 6 of those beat another batch of 25- RPI's using slowdown in the semis. =)

Thanks for the info on the slow down. I used it to beat a team in my CT that had beaten me by 37 and 21 points during the year.
I beat them by 7.

Statistically, the slowdown will always result in more variance due to the law of large numbers. Fewer shots means more variance in the numbers. It really is that simple sometimes.

Agreed.
