This similar to the 'Adam Dunn' question I posted earlier, but I decided to make it a separate thread.

Is it possible for pitcher to have high-enough ratings in other areas to overcome really bad control?

In his prime, Ryan walked more than 1 batter every 2 innings, struck out more than 1 batter an inning, and had a WHIP below 1.3.

Set aside starting 40 games and pitching 280+ innings. HBD is based on an era where that did not happen.

I don't think every world should have a Nolan Ryan-type. The real world doesn't right now. But it seems like it should be possible. There have been more HBD seasons than real baseball seasons.

If not Ryan-like in terms of Ks, are there any pitchers that have walked more than a batter every 2 innings and had a low WHIP? Made an all-star team?

I'm trying to figure out if low control pitchers have any chance of being any good in the ML. I've been offered a few in deals and so far I'm just ruling them out, even if the other ratings are good.

51 control, over 100 innings in RP for each of his 3 seasons he's been in the Majors. Solid. Not sure I'd go lower control than that.

Check out Trent Maddux in Kaline. With 27 control, and over 10 big league seasons, his numbers are closest to Ryan than anyone who has ever been given a chance.

Not a starter and even able to pitch that much because of dur/stam combo but his rate stats are similar to Ryan's

In burlington hitters are batting less than .200 vs him in his 106 inning ML career, resulting in a little over 6 hits per 9 innings, walks 3.5 or so per 9 innings as well and just about 10 k's per 9 innings...

on a side note this is my best DITR and one of the best i've ever seen, he was a throwaway IFA at 600K who projected to never have viable control but decent otherwise...he got a DITR and his control got to a reasonable level and everything else got better as well, went from AA/AAA type to stud ML setup

I'm not a "OMG!! HE HAS 44 CONTROL!!" guy so I'm likely to have a guy like you seek. Except SP don't strike out 1 per inning. Doesn't happen in HBD.

This guy, http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2043605 , has struck out 7.24 per 9 in 246 innings(his K9 is down this season as I've used him exclusively as a starter) and walked 4.79 per 9. 1.43 WHIP and 4.21 ERA.

I tried with several players earlier in HBD's existence to get low control guys by.

Darryl Kerr wasn't very good, but he threw a no-hitter one season with 39 control.

That's a little Ryan-esque.

With 44 control, a good WHIP, and an All-Star appearance last season, Wayne Thomas is Ryan-like minus the K numbers.

(Additionally for those of you who are believers in the importance of GB/FB, check out his rating.)

It can happen. I've got a guy with 2000+ career innings and more Ks than IP in his career. He's been a starter his entire career. Of course, he's a stud and pitches in the NL, so that helps. But I wouldn't say it's an absolute that SPs can't maintain a K per inning pace in HBD. And, to stay on topic, I really doubt the engine would allow it for a guy with sub-par control.

I guess I did make that a bit too absolute. It does and it's very rare. In my five current worlds, 4 of them have one pitcher with a K9 of 9+ on his career.

This guys stats shock me. Bad control...VEL, horrid GB, only 3 pitches (granted 1 and 2 are pretty good).

I've got a guy I've thought about posting in the forums for a while. A decent SP with 20 control. And in Ryan like form he threw a no-hitter this season, walked 8 in that game.

He's actually worse than Ryan in that he walks almost a guy every inning, but his other ratings are off the charts good.

What's interesting that that for the season HBD supressed HR totals he had a stellar 3.84 ERA in 194 IPs. He walked 160 guys, but only gave up 9 HRs. I wouldn't have suspected a guy with 20 control could be decent.
