sportsline.com claims that Nebraska is expected to join the Big Ten as early as friday.

As a Big 10 fan, I'd be thrilled if this happened 20 years ago. Now? Another spread offense...awesome. Yawn.

Got to love the money grubbing whores out there...this is going to make college football way worse if we see the 4, 16 team conferences that are being forecasted...I guess whatever casts aside talk of a playoff, right?

I'd rather see 15 conferences of 8, if they're going to do a major realignment. You play every team in your conference AND you get 5 non-cons to do with what you like...its the best solution as far as I'm concerned.

The Big Ten wants a 12th team so they can have a football conference championship game. Apparently Notre Dame said they weren't interested, and Nebraska won the coin-toss over Mizzou (if there is credibility to this report).

A sad-sack basketball team with a good football program - sounds like another Iowa, Penn State, or Northwestern (bit of a stretch) to me!

I'm not a fan of teams in conferences not playing each other for whatever reason...thus having a 12 team+ conference is rather unappealing to me, it almost becomes a bit of a luck of the draw deal on who you play in the other division from season to season.

Yep, I think Penn State is the spot-on comparison. Storied football program that isn't as good as they used to be, and a crappy basketball team.

As a Big Ten guy, I'm certainly not jumping for joy. If I felt confident that Nebraska would return to their former gridiron glory that'd be one thing, but as it is I'm slightly underwhelmed.

I know football is the money maker, but I would've rather grabbed Kansas and their basketball dominance.

snipet from this past week's Big 12 conference meetings;

Texas: Nebraska, what say you?
Nebraska: I am 100% committed to exploring all of my options.
Texas: Huh?
Nebraska: I am fully invested in this conference unless something better comes along.
Oklahoma: How does sitting on that fence feel?
Texas: Nebraska, what can we do to get you off of the fence?
Nebraska: Nothing really. Joining the Big Ten is appealing. I mean, it's like a time warp. Neither of us have really been relevant since the late 90's, so it will be kind of comforting to be amongst like-minded people. Michigan called me and invited me over for a 90210 and Melrose Place marathon.
Oklahoma: That's really sad.
Nebraska: Look, I want to be with other people who think time stopped after the late 90's. Do you know how much being me sucks right now? I haven't won a conference championship in ELEVEN years. Hell, even Kansas State over there has won a conference title since I have.
Kansas State: Kicked your *** too.
Nebraska: frack off. And my basketball program is an embarrassment. In the Big Ten, Sadler ball will be considered 'up tempo', and my waning baseball program will be one of the southern most schools, so I'll have a leg up there.
Texas: Everything you just said there makes me sad.
Nebraska: You're sad? The only reason I'm not sad is because my entire state has been on Prozac since Tom Osborne retired. Do you really think we like Pelini? The guy wears sweatshirts on the sideline. SWEATSHIRTS. The guys in the navy blue polo shirts at Wal-Mart that greet me when I walk in look and act more professional than he does.

Hey now Iguana...I happen to like Pelini.

Nebraska football wouldn't have slipped into a phase of irrelevance if the school had done the right thing and hired him after he coached Nebraska to a bowl win over Michigan State the first time around.

Instead, they had to experiment by bringing in 'he-who-shall-not-be-named' and things went to heck in a hurry.

Personally, I don't blame Nebraska if it decides to jump to the Big Many (while expanding, can we please do something about the stupid conference name?). The Big 12, from my vantage point, has been nothing but a 14-year screw job for all the former members of the Big Eight.

Iguana... I've read that entire article (probably would get reported if I posted it) and it was by far one of the funniest pieces of writing I've read... ever. Just awesome.

Couldn't the Big 10 just poach the number 2 from the conference when they steal Nebraska? Problem solved.

Katz from ESPN wrote, that if Notre Dame joins the Big 10, all the other expansion talk would cease.

ND won't happen till after the smoke clears, then they'll make a decision on what's best for them.

"Problem Solved"
Not really, this is a tectonic shift...

I'm a Big East non FCB enthusiast (as the name might indicate)
and the BE Rivals boards are going nuts, especially how Football effects the BB schools...
this will get very ugly.
I wouldn't be surprised to see state legislature get involved..
ex. Texas bolts to the Pac 10, what happend to the other TX schools, ie. A&M
they follow texas to the Pac 16
6/9/2010 1:39 PM
I think, legislatively, Texas and Texas A & M, can't be separated. The same holds true for Kansas and Kansas St.
