why cant big men score aNymore? Topic

somewha lost in the shuffle of other issues (hca, wide margins of victory, 3pt shooting) is the fact that bigs just absolutely cant score anymore.

am i wrong?

In tark D1, there are no PF in the top25 scoring and only one center and he is #25 (and also he is shooting only 41% which tells me his coach is just feeding him the ball to drive up his stats, he is not an effective offensive player).

Does anyone have a bigman averaging 12+ points per game who is shooting over 50%?

i may be wrong, but i seems like we used to see this quite often. Now i cant seem to get my bigs (who are upperclassmen and pretty good players, by the way) to shoot 50% even as i reduce their distro to 5 or so. which means that a large % of thier shots are probably putbacks.

It used to be that I could pretty much gauruntee that a bigman was going to shoot 50% or better. All you had to do ifhe was shooting under 50% was slowly decrease his distro until his shooting % climbed over 50%. now maybe that was no realistic either.... but...

this setup sure as heck isnt realistic. Bigs with greatLP and great aTH should be able to score in double figures and shoot 50% + .... am i wrong?

one of the offshoots of this is that coaches who ignore bigmen ar gaining a big advantage. Louisvile in tark just dominated one other best conferences eer, and his bigmen are sluggish and slow and don't score.

it just dont seem right.

only way that would seem right is if his big men were really athletic, ive noticed that can make up for being an average player.

but i woudlnt know yet, because it seems this hasnt been rolled out to naismith yet.

two of my top players at Buffalo

Motley - SF - 13.8 pts/game shooting 53.4%

Suleiman - PF - 11.4 pts/game shooting 50.4%

although I am not the greatest coach, is that what you are looking for? Or just in the top 25 players list?

Well, I am in Div-III, but my team leader in scoring is my starting Center.

If you set the distribution, he takes the shots. At least on my team.

There are obviously things to take into account. If the big man is getting fouls and not getting minutes because of it, etc, then he is not getting any points.

My Smith Providence team is lead by Thomas Fairchild, a 6-10 C who is averaging 12.5 ppg and has a .553 FG%. Surprisingly, all of my guards are averaging > 2apg.

Hughes, you've played no one (283 SOS), so yeah, solid players are going to put up numbers with that kind of schedule.

But notice oldave talked about scoring in double figures and having a good shooting percentage. He's smart enough to make allowances for guys that got into foul trouble, aren't getting distro, etc. Come on.

I've never thought big men could score with much efficiency, old engine or new.

That said, it's frustrating that Kenneth Palmer (not super computer-savvy, and having problems linking only him) isn't better:

7 rebounds per game? Not sure why he isn't getting more, and also not sure why he isn't scoring more, and more efficiently.

i have two d1 big men on different teams averaging 10+ ppg (one at 14.1) and shooting over 50%

I've had much better luck w/ bigs who also have some PE, the two best examples I have for you Dave are Brian Manley at GW in Crum, averaged 12.2 ppg on 50.5% shooting over the 1st 10 games and Szczesny Zeigler, averaging 11.8 ppg on 57.5% shooting at Marquette in Tark.

I know it's d3, but this guy is doing pretty much what you said against good competition.

I have a couple big men too, one of whom isn't even very good, I did not even realize he was 14 ppg and over 50% - LOL

phalen d1 has 3 sf's and 2 centers in the top ten scoring, most worlds d1 have a couple pf's/c's in the top 25, but not the 10 that you would expect from a natural spread.

from my limited knowledge of real college basketball, I would guess most teams best scorer is a guard, although how many big men are in the top 25 nationwide I would have no idea. HD might not be as far off as you are thinking.

I did notice tark has no big man in the top 25, but tark is a goofy world compared at least to the other 9 worlds.

It's no secret that guards (and perimeter-oriented SFs) dominate with the current engine. I don't think that the bigs have really gotten worse, only that guards are being rewarded more and coaches are taking advantage of this fact. Currently in midseason Iba 24 of the top 25 scorers at D1 are PG/SG and a few SFs. One PF (tops overall) and no centers.

Of course, I never really thought bigs could score under the old engine as well. I present to you the final ratings for William Farris, who was a Top-20 overall recruit, #5 or #6 PF:

In his Senior season, Farris managed to score 4.1 ppg on 39.4% shooting. As an aside, he was also the worst C- FT shooter I've ever seen, shooting less than 50% for his career.

He was drafted #33 overall.

I am just stating facts, not making accusations. He asked a question and I answered him.

Did I say anything accusatory? Why do you feel you have to attack me at every turn? I thought we were looking for reasoned dialogue.

My pf absolutely can score, but a lot of it has to do with his ridiculous 3 pt shooting.
