WTWD 1989 Prog. - FULL Topic

We are looking for an owner for the Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates and Minnesota Twins  franchises.  We have approaching the 1989 draft...the final season where the draft order will be based on comparing your teams record to their real-life counterpart. Here are the original rules:

WTWD standing for Whatif..Things Were Different.

Note: This was the original league post
Basically, there would be no initial draft.  You would select a team from the 1985 season, and that would be your roster.  For players with split seasons between two clubs, the team that the individual had more PA's or IP with would get him.  (If you aren't sure...ask)

Now, obviously, some teams look better to draft based on their 1985 roster.  Well....the weaker clubs may have an advantage heading into one of the strongest drafts around (1986 is a pretty nice one!)...giving them a strong shot at building their team around Greg Maddux or Barry Bonds.  Secondly, the first 5 drafts will have an order based on how your team matches up against your real teams record.   So, if you had the Cards...I'd match your 87 record up against the real 87 Cards.  The better you do, the higher you draft.   This would be done until the 1991 draft, whereby I'd revert to the worst through first order with the first 3 picks randomized.  For ties between teams, ranking would be according to live games played, then head-to-head matchup. Also, all teams would need to make the 40 game live minimum, otherwise missing the playoffs and consideration for the top 3 picks.  NOTE: It was decided upon that ONLY the first 3 seasons of drafting would be based on comparing to the real life cubs.  So, starting with the 89 draft, we will revert to the worst to first style.

Other considerations:

  • there would be a DH in the AL
  • Alignment as close to real life as possible
  • teams not selected in the initial selection process would have their players added to a mini-draft based on the real-life worst to first (order as presented at this link 1985 Standings).  If there is strong interest, we can try to fill all teams and use the same alignment as in real-life...and then when MLB expanded..we expand.  ...and my feeling over that is the new expansion clubs would get the EXACT players that they had in real-life.  So, current clubs would have to plan accordingly as they would lose those players in those expansion years.  NOTE: This is currently up for vote in our forum.  It appears that we may just go with an expansion draft similar to what happened in real life.
  • 40 game live min.
  • 6/4 below average AAA
  • UNLIMITED keepers
  • REAL team names
  • Trading..full trading, but only draft picks up to one year in advance (ie. the next draft)
