I had a similar situation a couple of seasons back.  I don't think they take into account the current GPA now, just class and SH minutes.  If a student is a good student (ie, a 3.0 GPA) then he should do well with less minutes, but it seems there is a randomness now in the grades that was not there before.  At least that is what it seems like to me.

I'm not entirely sure,  but what I am sure about is that more than doubling a guy's SH minutes and getting zero + change is obnoxious.

Doubled it how?  If you went from 3 minutes to 6, that wouldn't be enough.  With a 1.7 GPA,  I increase the minutes by at least 15

the absolute number of minutes is more significant than doubling as alblack said - what # minutes did he have before and after?

Guy had a 1.7 midterm grade after having over a 3.0 cumulative, I more than doubled his SH minutes..and he still ended up with a 1.7....that's just stupid...
Agreed.  If I ran the game, I'd rid it of grades, I think it's excessive nonsense.

why is it stupid? why shouldn't random chance be part of the equation?  do you think that real life players never have sudden academic problems, or that it's always the coach's fault when they do?  the worst changes seble has made have to do with reducing variance, eliminating injuries etc.  more variance please!

In my honest opinion, I think SH is a pretty random thing in general.  In the last calendar year, I've probably remembered to adjust my SH minutes no more than a handful of times (literally) and have only had one player become ineligible in that time frame.  In fact, although I've probably just been extremely lucky, I seem to have better luck just setting the SH minutes at the start of the season and leaving it alone than I do trying to adjust accordingly at mid-terms.  I certainly wouldn't suggest this as a viable strategy, but it's only burned me once in about twelve months.  Maybe I should have been playing Powerball this whole time...............

Because random chance doesn't generall play a role in GPA in real life.  To some extent, yes, of course, but not in any significant way.

lol. from a coach's perspective it certainly does. way, way more than in WIS

That seems odd.  From an athlete's perspective, it doesn't.  You go to class, you pass.  Pretty much end of story at any place I've ever heard of.  You have to (oxymoronically) actively avoid doing anything to be ineligible.  That's not "random" in the way we're using it.

I'd rather have him been injured for the season.

My issue is merely why have study hall if it literally has ZERO effect on gpa.

how many minutes did he have before and after doubling?

I had him at 4, which was enough to get him a 3.0 the previous year and semester, suddenly dropped to 1.7 so I bumped him up to 12 and it didn't move.

I realize that 12 isn't enough for some players and that some players require a larger increase, but a move from 4 to 12 minutes should at have SOME effect on his gpa, especially with a WE near 70.

As a general rule, I start all (Non Redshirt) Freshmen at 10 minutes and adjust up or down based on the first Mid Term grades.  That usually works OK for me.
