Anyone notice high fouls numbers in guards? Topic

Some of the D3 Wooden conferences made mention of it early in the season, so I decided to start paying attention and it seems like they were right.

It seems especially true in PGs.

I have a 30 ath / 72 spd / 58 def / A+ IQ PG who has collected either 4 or 5 fouls in 9 of my 21 games, often not playing against great competition.  On the flip side, I have fouled out about 15 guards in those games.

In those same games, I don't believe more than one or two bigs total have fouled out.

Just seems odd.  Anyone notice a similar pattern?

Yes.

My "working theory" for why is due to the potential for larger spreads in athleticism/speed at the guard position vs. in the post. You can easily have a guard with 20-25 or more points difference over his defender, and usually that manifests itself in fouls. With the new recruit generation essentially nuking speed at the low post, the spreads aren't as wide (in general, exceptions exist) in the PF/C areas, leading to fewer fouls.

Obviously it doesn't explain the situation with your guard, who I would imagine has superior numbers vs. just about anyone you've faced, so maybe I'm way off base as to what drives the foul part of the engine.

Yeah, rednu, I think that's a good general theory.  But I have noticed this trend in odd defensive matchups.  Ath clearly plays some role, but it doesn't seem to be determinative, and I can't find much of a speed correlation, although, admittedly, I haven't tracked that very well.

I haven't seen anything like this. Looking at my D3 team in Wooden and my 2 starting guards are almost identical in ath/sp/D one is 43/78/55 and averages 2 FPG and has had 4+ fouls in only 2 games and his IQ is at B+ while my other guard is 44/77/57 with also a B+ IQ and averages 1.9FPG with only 4+ fouls in 2 games.

Are you by chance playing uptempo or pressing? These would lead to more fouls.

Ath is the problem here imo. My guards which goes to the line the most are the ones with high ath, not the ones with high spd. So conversely, I think low ath high spd guards draw more fouls than a high ath low spd guard.

Initially, mason, I thought that was the case.  And I have started playing high tempo.  But I was noticing it before that, and even so, with that speed, def, and an A+ IQ, He shouldn't be at 4-5 fould in 45% of my games.

Tianyi, the guys my guy is fouling aren't going to the line a lot.  Hell, a lot of them aren't even shooting much.  And most don't have significant advantages in speed/ath.

Take this game from last night: http://whatifsports.com/hd/GameResults/BoxScore.aspx?gid=6792543

Both PGs fouled out.

Mine: 30/72/58/A+
His: 33/66/49/B+

Both of my PGs had 2 distro, and combined only took 2 shots.  His PGs combined for 9 shots and 4 FTs.  Where are the fouls even coming from?  It doesn't make any sense.

My SG Billy Poirer is in his 3rd year of starting. As a sophmore he averaged 2.2 fouls per game. Now as a A+ IQ defender he averages 3.5 fouls per game. As a JR he averaged 3.3 fouls per game. Not sure why he all of a sudden would foul that much more per game.

Great point, mbalding.

As for Byrne, my PG, he's in the same boat: http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/PlayerProfile/Stats.aspx?tid=3795&pid=1630544

Soph: 21 mpg / B+ IQ / 1.7 fpg
Jun: 25.4 mpg / A IQ / 1.9 fpg
Sen: 27.6 mpg / A+ IQ / 3.1 fpg

It makes no sense.

The PBPs do seem to be anectdotally showing more non-shooting fouls, particularly in the backcourt.

I noticed that also with my DIII Lincoln team in Crum and made many comments on it.  I had 4 guards fould out in 2 games and my starting PG fouled out 9 times including 3 straight games. He averaged about 23 minutes a game and even in one game had 4 fouls in about 1 minute and 15 seconds of play?????

And that's a good defensive guard with an A- IQ.  There's something wrong here, in my opinion.

iv'e seen the same thing in my PG on my UMSL Wooden team.

And that guy is a freaking stud.  OK, now I'm really convinced.

I assume that seble doesn't care what I think, however.
