Quoting myself from the HD forums:

Am I the only person here who doesn't feel like it's appropriate to celebrate the death of anyone?  Ever?  I mean, I'm even a Republican.  Moderate Republican.  But Republican.  But I'm still not celebrating by any means...  Am I glad that he's dead?  I guess...  I'm glad that he's out of power.  The man was incredibly brilliant and put it to a very bad use.  But I'm not going to celebrate his being killed.

Yeah, good ridance but I am not exactly going to celebrate.

Some people will just look for a reason to party in the streets.

FWIW, there's no way in hell you'd find me celebrating en masse.  Way too convenient for some vindictive BinLaden-supporter to easily kill a bunch of people.

One of our finest hours in the past 10 years.  `Nuff said.

I'm not celebrating, but the world is a better place without him.  I might go in the kitchen and have a beer and reflect.  Am I celebrating...no, am I glad he's dead...hell yes.

Having lost 2 friends on 9/11, I have a personal interest in seeing that SOB pay. Am I jumping for joy and busting out the champagne? No. Quiet satisfaction would be more like it because like vermin, there's always another one out there to deal with.

Quiet satisfaction, not celebration.

And the worry is that this gives a creature the likes of Al Queda new resolve to continue killing infidels.

Or does OBL not get to be a martyr because he was working so hard to avoid becoming a martyr?

I agree with the 'quiet celebration' sentiment of this thread, however - I do recall seeing footage of those animals dancing in the streets when the towers came down....

I'm not sayin',  I'm just sayin'.......

So they're "animals" because they danced in the streets?  What does that make us?  They were celebrating the fact that the United States was proven not to be invincible.  We were celebrating the fact that a man got shot in the face.

3000 people went to work the morning of September 11, 2001 not expecting to end up casualties of war.  Bin Laden lived with the knowledge that he was being actively hunted as a direct result of his act of war.  Big difference in what's being celebrated.

Yes, as a matter of fact.  They were celebrating the mass murder of 3000 innocent people.

Americans were celebrating (albeit overenthusiastically) the assassination of a mass murderer.

If you don't see the difference, you gotta big problem with context.

And I am someone who was uncomfortable with the World-Series, Super-Bowl kind of gaiety they were showing on the news.  A quiet fist-pump, and "about effin' time" would have been sufficient.

The point of the matter is the U.S. enforcing a National Policy statement. In reality we can be attacked at any time, so be it if we want to live in an open society. However, if you are targeted as the planner or perpetrator of terrorism, your days are numbered no matter how long it takes. These policies are used as a deterrent pure and simple.  Anyone ever see the movie "Raid on Entebbe" or "Munich"?  (All the celebrating, unnecessary in my opinion.)
