Newbie question about catchers... Topic

...just how important is the catchers pitch calling rating?? Is it that big of a difference  for a pitching staff?? I have a kid who cant hit a lick but has a 78 pitch calling and another catcher who hits a TON but has a 46 pitch calling....how jacked will my pitchers get if I put this guy in?    Thanks in advance

From what I have gleaned from the veterans, every 10 points of pitch calling will (over the long run) result in pitcher ERAs that are 0.10 lower.  So, without knowing specifics, it sounds like in your case you should go with the offensive catcher.

depends on the rest of your team, can the offensive catcher play 1b? what about DH?

32 points is noticeable.   However, it's just about the trade-off.   A guy that hits .197 with 0 homers is a hole in the line-up.  46 PC isn't ideal but, if the guy hits .310 with 30 homers, he's a much better option.

thank you gentlemen....good info!!

Recommendations for C is 50 PC... 46 isn't much below that, so I wouldn't sweat it if the guy is an awesome hitter.

I would never play a catcher at 1B.

I just took a look in one of my worlds, where the world front page listed the leaders in poor plays at first base.  The leaders in each league, by a far margin, were both converted catchers.  One had 20 poor plays, the other had 17.

I took at look at each guy and looked at each of the minus plays that he made.  In all cases, it was on a base hit.  I'm assuming it was very poor range (4 for one, 8 for the other) that was turning potential outs into hits.  So for the sake of argument, I assumed that each of these minus plays should have been an out at first, with any runners already on base advancing one base.  Here's what I found.

For player A, who had 20 minus plays, the 20 minus plays turned into 18 singles and 2 doubles over 825 IP at first base.  But even more alarming was that when I reconstructed the innings by turning the minus plays into outs (with runners advancing a base), the minus plays led to 23 runs that otherwise would not have scored.  Granted, his team was an abyssmally bad defensive team beyond this guy, but 23 runs in 95 games is almost .25 runs a game.  That should open some eyes.

Player B had 17 minus plays, but I somehow lost track of one when going through the boxscores.  Of the 16 that I did track, they turned into 12 singles and four doubles over 734 IP at first bas.  When reconstructing the innings where the minus plays happened, they led to 9 additional runs.  So around .1 runs per game.  But he played on a team with much better pitching and overall defense beyond this guy, so that probably helped mitigate the damage.

Bottom line: playing catchers at first base = bad idea,  Unless you're getting substantially more offense out of him that you would for a "true" first-baseman type, I'd stay away from it.

I am old school, but I love good defensive catchers playing all season. This season in Addicted Users, neither of my platoon catchers could hit much: .213 / .305 / .319 10HR & .236 / .302 / .348 5HR.

I also only had 2 passed balls all year: League Average was 12.  And also got 48 cs and lead in CS% with 37.4%.  Just my style.

IMO opinion, you have to fully commit or say "f this".

Advantages to going with pitch calling; in a pitchers park, I'm a believer that you can get .5 in ERA between a high 80s PC and your avg 50. It actually reduces overall OAV, so it depends a lot on the control of your pitching staff (less walks, less on base to help the lower OAV be lower OBP) and your defense.

When it goes right, you get this;   Wichita Whinier Bytches . You learn which pitchers you can pick up that are cost efficient and effective under this system and free up your cap resources for whatever floats your boat.

But when it goes wrong, it goes 56-106 wrong. You probably also need a defensively over-capable SS, which means 99 times out of 100 he's not hitting for avg, which means if you screw up the production of the other 6 or 7 batters, you are completely f'd. No amount of low ERA will help you.

So you posted half of it twice?  Dumbass.

But your theory is correct, IMO.    If you're piddlefarting around deciding 55 or 62 PC, you're wasting time.   Jump in the water or find a hitter with 60 AS/AA and 50+ PC to catch.

Removing Ronnie Snow from my lineup would hurt a lot more than 9 runs on defense.
