Play Distribution Topic

As a certified noob, I'm kinda faltering on the coaching aspect.  I have read the beginners stuff form 08 and searched for info on Play Distro, but only found one post.  Can ya'll give me the run down on how it works?

I would assume it must add up to 100 (as in %) but saw a post that said it could be les than 100. What does that mean for the remainder of 'unused' distro?

What happens if i don't touch distro and leave it at all zeros?

Any recommendations for a FB offense on how to set up distros? 

What is the Off% ?

Distro is in relation to the other players on the court. Lets say that your five on the court have a distro of 4-2-6-4-4 (which adds up to 20). The distribution would work out (roughly) to where the three players set at 4 would get 20% of the shots (4/20=20%), the player set to 6 would get 30% of the shots and the player set at 2 would get 10%.

At all zeroes, the computer runs it for you and goes based on the situation, players on the floor, etc. I have had success setting it at all zeroes. As a rookie coach, I had some screwed up distros as I didn't fully understanding which ratings were the most relevant ones to success, so when I switched to all zeroes and let my guys play, I did much better.

this distro is for SCORING plays, so say I have a PG who's not good shooting (PE) but fine ball handling and passing he would have a lower distro because he won't end up shooting the ball often?  

Or is it just to get the ball to your best shooting and low post players?

BTW I guess I'm running (if you could call it that) the Fast Break Offense.

Oh and what about Double Teams?

this is correct.  I seem to recall seble saying either a shot, assist, TO, PF, or FTA are the outcomes basically determined by distro, not just shots.

What are a few general philosophies about Distro? Does EVERYONE use them? Or only for some offenses?  Is it more important if you have just 2 studs and don't want the role players taking over?

Distro applies to all the offenses, although it may be less effective in the FB offense.  Most experienced coaches will tell you to use it; after all, don't you want to decide who is taking the shots?  You are the coach after all.

The way I think of distro is what percentage of the time do I want to run plays designed to get a specific guy a shot.  He can choose to shoot or pass, he can f it up and turn it over, or he can get fouled.  In the hierarchy of setting distro, the best scorer should obviously get a lot of distro but I also look at their likelihood of forcing up a shot (especially vs the FCP), their passing, what type of defense I'm facing, and what the likely defensive matchup is.  I'll give distro to an unselfish guy with high off IQ and great passing even if he isn't a great scorer because he can make a better choice than a guy with say really high PER but who will force up shots, has crappy passing and low off IQ.

The ideal guy is a good scorer that is unselfish and a good passer.  Especially against the FCP.  My pants are getting tight just thinking about it.

You do not have to reach 100% on distro.  In fact, it's best if you don't.  Neither should you leave it at zeroes.

I'm certainly no expert on it, but I use the exhibition games and the first couple of non-cons to figure out my scoring hierarchy.  You should expect players to be good scoring options if they:

(a) Have high IQ in your chosen offensive set (preferably B or higher);

(b) Guards with high SPD, bigs with high ATH;

(c) any player with good BH;

(d) and lastly, those with good LP or PER ratings can all be reliable scorers.  (There's a reason I listed LP and PER last).

If you're running FB, fast guards can go for lots of layups and hopefully even draw fouls.  If you have a guard with low PER, just set his 3point to 0 or lower and give him some distro.  He'll find a way to score (this is where guards with LP can make things happen).

Philosophy on total distro will vary here by coach, but I don't think many, if any, ever set total distro to 100.  I aim for 40 to 60% myself.  Others go higher.  It's really something you have to do some trial and error with to find the right mix for the players you have.

I don't agree with this at all.  It matters not.  Whatever #s you set at, it's just a pct% anyway.  Setting at 100 absolutely no different from setting at 10.

Well, I like not reaching 100 because it makes it easier to readjust distribution numbers without having to redo all of them if you think a particular player might merit more distro, or you want to up someone's distro against a certain team, etc.

I set all my players at a level of 0 to 9, then adjust during the season according to matchups

Is it wise to set all players with some amount of distro? 

What would happen if i went:  5,10,5,5,5,5 to my top 6 players and left the rest at zero? (that's about what I did for the last game)

Zeroes only work in two situations: where everyone is at 0 and walk-ons. If you have a player set at 0 on the floor (when there are other players who have a distro number), you are playing 4 on 5. That player will rarely see the ball. I forgot to update my distro before my recent exhibition game. I had four players set at 0. Here was their combined line: 68 minutes, 0-for-3 from the field, 1-for-2 from the line, four assists, three turnovers, 1 point.

We'll have to disagree.  Distro probably means less in a FB offense than one of the slower sets, but it is still the best way to maximize the production of your best scorers.   Leaving it set to 0 only means you're letting the AI make the play calls.  In my experience, the AI is a crappy coach.

I wish I had a link to the original post, but this is what I saved from one of the better discussions on play distro on this board some time ago.  It's in my "Tips" folder and I refer to it often:
"Distribution may be left at 0, but this is not an advisable strategy. Some coaches mistakenly believe that leaving distribution at 0 lets the offense take what is given to them, but this is not the case. The opposite is actually true, as the sim decides who will take your shots based completely on your team's offensive capabilities, completely ignoring the settings of your opponents' defense. The only time when this is strategy is somewhat useful is during exhibition games. This strategy allows you to see which players the sim believes are your best offensive weapons. This can be useful information, as the sim likely understands what makes effective offensive players in the engine better than we do."
