Newbie question--Why does this guy suck? Topic

Hey guys,

I'm a noob who just took over a team and moved them into Kansas City (1, 2, 3, -2, -2).  I realize the change in parks will have an impact on some of the guys I've inherited.  But this guy was supposed to be the ace of my staff, and he's suddenly my worst pitcher!  Admittedly, my understanding of ratings is still in progress but I can't figure out why he's so bad.  Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

A few things off the top of my head.

1. That guy shouldnt be the Ace of any team.
2. His vL and vR are nothing amazing
3. How is the pitch calling on his catcher? That could be playing into it.

His VR is weak and his pitches are below average.   The question should be "How in the hell did he manage to do as well as he did in previous seasons?"

The pitch calling of my primary catcher is 70.  Backup is 62.  True, he shouldn't be the ace...but I didn't take over a very good team.  And as it turns out, he's NOT the ace.  He's an expensive dud.  I expected him to be the ace based on past performance.

His "best" seasons were S15 (.278 OAV, 1.39 WHIP, 4.37 ERA) and S17 (.273 OAV, 1.42 WHIP, 4.33 ERA).  Those are very mediocre, at best.

Not sure which past performances led you to believe he could be an ace of anything.

LHSP's face about 80% RHB, pretty much any lefty with a vR < 60 is going to be dreadfully bad.

Like Mike said, I'm surprised your guy wasn't worse.

EDIT: splits aren't as important as contact/power/eye for hitters, but for pitchers they take precedent over everything else.  there's not a single more important rating in HBD than a LHP's vR.

just this year is probably mostly variance, although your defense isn't particularly helping.

move derosa to the bench, mayne to 3B, and trade for a SS with ~ 90/90/90/90 defensive ratings that can't hit a lick, all of your pitchers will look a lot better.

He is a lefty (meaning hitters will be mostly right handed and using their vL split, which is generally higher) and his split against said right handed batters is not laughably low, but it isn't high either.  If he had a couple pitches with great ratings he could get away with his low split....but he doesn't.  He would make a great SP4 or SP5 filler/innings eater.  But he won't carry anyone's staff.

If something seems way, way out of line in HBD, and the answer can possibly be "Small Sample Size", then it usually is.  He's certainly no better than the other guys have told you, but he's not a 7+ ERA pitcher, and I would be surprised if he was a 7+ ERA pitcher from here forward.

it's laughably low if you like having a ML team that wins

i mean he's barely passable as a spot starter/mop up man, so if you just need somebody to eat innings when your staff is gassed that's fine.  i wouldn't use him as a SP4 if i was planning on a halfway decent season, it's just so so easy to get somebody better.

edit: for clarity i don't demand a stud at SP4, but i often do get a couple of playoff spot starts out of whoever i use and that fellow is not somebody i want as a playoff spot starter.  if you fill up a staff with arms of his ilk, you're going to have a bottom 5 or 6 staff.  guys like him are always abundant for like 1 yr @ $2M on the FA market.

His pitches and splits are pretty bad. I hope you werent the one that gave him an 8.5 million contract... try waiving him, or dumping his contract on someone by adding in a decent prospect

Just did a quick check of my three teams that I've had for an extended period(meaning I had time to build them).   Lowest VR is 60.  The worst P1-P2 is 74-64.  And he was injured and dropped from 76-65.

You don't get better by trading prospects to dump a contract.

You don't get better by trading prospects to dump a contract.
You can in the pre-season if you use the extra money on an upgrade in FA.

Midseason you're probably better off using the prospects to trade for a better player and toss in the pitcher to balance the salaries if you don't have cap space.
