84 RPI makes tournament as At Large? Topic

Looks like they still don't have all the bugs worked out in the new selection.

its not all about RPI anymore...

RPI used to be the #1 standard. WIS has devalued RPI  and increased the value of record vs. top 50, top 100, etc.

Can you post the link of the team, please?  No, RPI isn't all selection is about anymore, but an 84?  That seems a bit odd.

Of note on the positive side were the two wins against Mississippi.  The rest. . .

That's a PIT team if I ever saw one.

Looks like real life to me. Power conference team with a shiny record gets a bid even though they actually played a horrible schedule. If this was real life they would probably get something like a 5 or 6 seed since they had to play through the "gauntlet" of the SEC.

My speculation, some close loses, couple with some big winning margins, not reflected in RPI but is in projection report & seedings.  Does anyone know if 'actual' team rating plays any role in the picking process? I hope not, and I don't think so, but this team is a monster rating wise for an 84 RPI.  I see they lost in the first round, but I sure would not have wanted to play them as a one or two seed, which I assume Illinois was.

8-6 vs top 100 rpi, 2-2 vs top 50, 2-1 vs top 25

if thats all you knew, you'd be pretty damn confident putting them in the NT, no? put that with a conf championship in a major conference, and i see no problem with this one.

keep in mind how small the difference between 50 and 84 on the rpi is... its not nearly as big as it sounds. in one of my worlds (only checked 1), its 3 hundredths, which often separates #1 and #2... doesn't take much difference to get there, a couple really bad opponents become bad opponents, a couple bad opponents become mediocre opponents, and you are there. this team played some really crappy opponents - but that top line is what we should be concerned about, for purposes of NT seeding. who cares if 4 of the teams they beat were 200-250 in the nation instead of 150 in the nation?

That world's SEC really ISN'T overwhelming, is it?

Totally agree here. 8 losses, 6 of them on the road, with no bad losses. Throw in a 200+ rpi loss, I might see it, but they beat everyone they should have beat, and lost on the road to teams that are reasonable. Plus they beat some of them, and defended the home court.

I dunno, I think it's still possible to manipulate the schedule.  With the current system it seems like the best way to go is to try to get it such that your schedule features ~ 6-8 games against the top 50.  Try to schedule teams you match up well against and win 2-3 of those games.  Then schedule 4 or 5 against prospective 51-100 teams and win 3-4 of them.  Make the rest of them soft teams and just win those games.  I'm not sure I like this better than the old system that at least rewarded you for playing tough teams.

The old system was entirely RPI-based.  I think RPI is easier to manipulate than the current system, if only because we all know the RPI formula and how to manipulate it.

For people comparing to real life, nobody with an RPI over 75 has EVER made the tournament as an at large.
