New redshirting rules quandary. Topic

Here's the question:  I don't really need this recruit this year and his WE only dropped 6 with the redshirt (before it's mentioned, it was too expensive to inform of redshirt internationally).  Do I leave the redshirt on him or take it off and try to find him minutes and attempt to give it to my other freshman?  More importantly, if I try to re-apply the shirt will his response only get worse under the new rules or is it guaranteed to remain the same?

Since it only dropped 6 points, and he wasn't playing anyway, I'd leave it alone

Yea 40 - 34 isn't a big enough difference to waste a year by playing him when you don't want to

Short answer: It will get worse.

This is my first season in HD, but speaking of reshirting...is there a need to give any practice time to SH if you redshirt a player?  If it matters, the player was a transfer and came in at a 2.0 GPA.  Thanks!

Yes, absolutely will need SH.

There is absolutely a need. R.S. can still flunk and not practice which means they won't get better. The more study hall minutes you give now the less you have to give later.

A redshirt player who flunks still practices with the team and still improves. Where he will experience a negative consequence from flunking is from reduced improvement between seasons, because he is spending additional time in summer school getting his grades up.

From the FAQ:

Q: What happens if one of my players becomes academically ineligible?
A: Couple of things will happen - you'll lose the player for the next semester (he'll still be on the roster and can practice but just won't be eligible to play). If his cumulative GPA is still not above 2.0 at the end of the next semester, he'll be academically ineligible for another semester. In addition, each time you lose a player to academics, your reputation will take a hit. Remember, these kids are here to get an education. This isn't a minor league program for the NBA you know.

Q: If a player finishes the season with less than a 2.0 GPA, will be eligible for next season?
A: Yes. The player will be enrolled in summer school to bring his GPA up to 2.0 - of course you'll see much less improvement in the off-season for that player and he may actually get worse based on how much time he'll be in class over the summer.

Willie Polk

Redshirt. Ineligible due to academics (1.9 first midterm, 1.7 first final, 1.7 second midterm, 2.0 second final (1.9 cumulative)). Improved 33 points (39 if you account for the -6 WE drop of redshirt).

I RS'd a guy and he didn't have a WE drop, then I took it off and put it back on him and it was no issue, no bad response.

Right - here's the quick version.

There are two top level reactions - Good and Bad.  These will never change.

For Good, there is only one lower level reaction (no WE drop) so that will not change either. For Bad, there are a full range of lower level reactions - from loss of 1WE to loss of 99WE. That lower level reaction can (and usually will) change for the worse, the more often you put on and take off a RS.

The OP's guy had a Bad top level reaction. That won't change. The lover level (how much WE is lost) can/will change.

Thanks for the responses.  That's what I needed to know, zbrent.  I never have accepted any WE loss before (I could always turn this response positive under the old rules), but I may let it ride now.

I have a freshman that I just redshirted. He has high/high potential in a number of key categories, but he is pretty useless right now. He took a 16 point WE drop from 68 to 52. Is that 16 point drop that big of a deal or should I just roll with it? Any advice is appreciated.

I'd have no problem at all leaving the RS on a guy like that. Especially since he's "pretty useless right now" he probably won't get a ton of PT, so won't benefit much more from playing instead of sitting this season. With a bunch of high/high and 52 WE, he should develop enough to play some next season (plus the improved IQ) and ultimately get much closer to his full potential.

There's no need to roll the dice if it's still a 52, that's still more than enough to see a healthy gain, and if he's not useful to you now there's no reason not to take the opportunity to develop him into something you can use later without wasting a year of eligibility. I rarely worry about the work ethic drop from redshirting until/unless it takes the guy's WE below 30.
