Prospects siging major league contracts Topic

I'm struggling to put my mind around this.  Last season I signed Virgil Molina to a 3 year major league contract.  What happens when his contract expires?  How much will he ask for?  Should I let this guy grow in the minors or should I be bringing him up now?

I would have jumped him to AA after a season in A ball and then put him in AAA next season then the ML the season after.  But it really depends on whether you need him and if he's better than the current players you have blocking him from the ML roster.

Well is certainly better.  I just want to get the most out of him and don't want to speed up his clock any.

that's why i'm reluctant to sign an intl to a major league contract in order to get him to sign with me

If you sign him to a major league contract, he starts at 327k no matter what level he plays at, right?

So if he's in the majors by the time the contract is up, does he go straight to his first arbitration no matter how many pro seasons he has?

If that's the case, have you not already "sped his clock up?"

OK, I'm certain all of you have it wrong.

First, you can designate him, without waivers, and remove him from your 40.
Second, he will not be arb-el until his has the required numbers of BIG LEAGUE years.
Finally, he will have two options when that contract runs out and he will re-up for something like 57k.

You're welcome.

There's a thread where you can ask such things.   What's the name of that?

I had been thinking there had to be some kind of implied risk in offering a major league contract.  But really, then, am I understanding this correctly now... the only downside is that you are paying the player 327k in salary instead of 8k/27k/38k/55k?

So the smart way to do it would be to:  Remove from 40 man roster.

I'm not sure you can do it without designating.

Yes, damag, that and he loses an option year(not that it should matter if he's good).

Thanks Mike.

I had to designate him for assignment without waivers, and then I was able to remove him from the 40 man roster.
