AUCTION League - Vol. ONE
An Auction league should be an intriguing concept to try here on WIS.
To my knowledge – this has not been done in basketball themes on What If Sports.
OVERVIEW
• In an AUCTION format, each owner uses his allocated budget of $100 to bid on players, thereby affording each owner an OPPORTUNITY at EVERY PLAYER.
• The Strategic component of budget and spending and assigning dollar values to great players presents a real challenge, and diverges from the traditional ‘snake draft’ or Salary cap leagues that are predicated on What If Sports assigned ‘salary’ figures.
• Owners must account for more variables than a ‘snake draft’, because the AUCTION is a COMPETITION against all owners in the league for EVERY PLAYER.
• AUCTION drafts require AGGRESSIVE & SAVVY owners – the PASSIVE nature of waiting for a turn in a traditional style draft would be a liability.
• To that end, the more experience and knowledge owners should benefit more so than a casual participants here as WhatIfSports.
• The leagues Auction process schedule looks to have the process complete in 19 days, which is about the same period as a ‘snake draft’.
League Set-up and RULES
• Each Franchise starts with $100
• I will allow TRADES – This should add an additional component of strategy, plus it helps balance the unknown of this Auction –
Most owners are accustomed to drafts, so the trading helps ensure owners can still recover if they botch early bids, are left with more money than players, or less money than talent, etc.
PLAYERS
• All players are eligible to be bid upon. No CLONES, ROOKIES, of Waiver Wire.
• The first AUCTION league may benefit from not having a traditional theme salary limit, such as $47 or 52 Million. – only the $100 million Auction dollars.
• Players with Bids are awarded to Teams and are exclusive.
• A Master Alpha based list will help owners locate players, and let owners know when they are scheduled to be auctioned.
LOTS
• Approximately 320 players will be divided into and allocated into EIGHT LOTS, so the LOTS should be 40 players each, manageable and easy to scout.
• The Master Topic Thread will contain a Scheduled Alpha List that determines a players corresponding LOT.
• After the first eight lots are finished, all players not awarded to a team from those initial eight lots, will be placed into LOT NINE. LOT TEN will consist of ANY player that has not been purchased by a league team.
BIDS
• The type of auction is ‘Sealed Bid’ or a ‘Blind Auction’
• In this type of auction all bidders simultaneously (on the same day) submit sealed bids so that no bidder knows the bid of any other participant.
• The highest bidder pays the price they submitted. This type of auction is distinct from the English auction, in that bidders can only submit one bid each. Furthermore, as bidders cannot see the bids of other participants they cannot adjust their own bids accordingly
• OWNERS only bid on players contained in available lots for the specified time period. Lot ONE only, and then LOT TWO only, etc.
• A submitted bid cannot be reduced or changed by the owner – it is final.
• When a LOT closes – the bid is Final, and the player and his bid cost are awarded to the highest biding owner.
• TIES will be awarded to the earliest date mark of site mail.
• SO….Bid High and early.
• The Commissioners bids MUST be sent to a participating owner to ensure the time stamp and prevent from ‘vulture-ing’ bargains.
• The minimum spent on each of the 12 players is $1.
• Bids should be whole dollar amounts – No ‘change’ or fractions, full dollars only.
• Bids should not exceed $100. An owner should not bid more money than the amount his team has left. Do not ‘bounce a check’ by bidding and then winning and being responsible for more than $100.
• The Commissioner reserve the right to resolve disputes by placing a player in Lot 8 or 9, such as in the even an owner is found to have been wrongly awarded a player or if OVER $100, etc.

OWNERS
• Your main responsibility is to not bid over $100 for your team. Do not try to float above that amount with excessive bids.
• Owners will not be awarded players that exceed a $100 Auction Cap amount for their team.
• Ensure that all 12 player slots will have at least $1 minimum allocated for their salary.
• Questions and Comments should be addressed as soon as possible to ensure a fair and fluid Auction and League.
