Like College Progressive League (LCPL)

Overview

The LCPL is a tri-season progressive league which will begin with the 55-56, 75-76, and 95-96 seasons. The league will progress one season at a time and will conclude in exactly 20 seasons with the 74-75, 94-95, and 14-15 seasons.

Players will only be kept for the first four seasons from their pro career (first appearance in the WIS database) like in college. Players can also be redshirted, which will give the team access to that player’s 5th season.

Each team will have 12 scholarships to give out at any time. Any player that you recruit and sign is given a scholarship for the number of season they have eligible unless you cut them.  (i.e. if you sign a Jr. he will have two seasons of eligibility).

Recruiting

Recruiting will be done via blind bid. This will give each owner a shot at every player available (recruit wisely). Bibbing will go as many rounds necessary to fill all of the open slots on all teams (I don’t expect more than 4 or 5). Recruit will take place after the mid-way point of the season (all-star game). This will allow plenty of time for recruiting approximately 5 to 7 days per rd.

Bids can be made in whole dollars only. You must bid (at least $1) on exactly as many players as you have open scholarships. You may not spend more than 25% of your initial recruiting budget on any single player in any round of recruiting.

The first round of recruiting each owner will submit a list of players they will recruit. Again this must equal the number of open scholarships available on the team (for the initial reciting period this will be 12). In subsequent rounds each owner will blind bid on available players with the money they have available (do not go over or you bid will be rejected). The second round of bidding you must only bid on those players that were on the list you provided in rd. 1. You will not need to submit a list of players you plan on recruiting after the second round.  Any money spent on a player not won or tied will be returned to that owner for next round bidding.

Again, you have to place a bid for each of the open scholarships you have on your team.

Recruiting Money

Each team will be given $100 per open scholarship up to $600. Teams that cut players from the previous season will not be given additional recruiting money for those cut players.

Initial Recruiting Period

For the first recruiting period every team will be given $1,000 to recruit their players to fill their 12 team roster.

The initial recruiting period will be based on players in 55-56, 75-76, and 95-96 seasons that are in their first four seasons in the WIS database.  The list of eligible players will tell you if the player is a Fr., So., Jr., or Sr.

For any player that you sign from the initial recruiting period (or couple of seasons after) you will not have right to them when they reappear in the database in the last few seasons of the league.

Recruiting Ties

Recruiting ties will move forward for a second rd. of bidding if the owners want to continue bidding on that player. If an owner would like to pull out of further bidding then their money will immediately be returned for bidding in the next rd.  Keep in mind the money you have for recruiting in additional rounds will be determined by how much money you have returned from players you did not win.  If there is still a tie after a second rd. then then ties will be broken via random process of the commissioner’s choosing.

Any ties on minimum bid players ($1) will automatically be broken and awarded to an owner without going to a second rd. of bidding.

Walk-on players

All players not chosen on a team during the recruiting/bidding will be placed in the walk-on pool.

A walk on can be picked up one of two ways: to replace a player you are redshirting or for players who are not in the WIS database and miss a season. For players who are not in the WIS database for a season(s) they will not automatically redshirt unless you request it. Walk-ons are first come first serve after the last rd. of recruiting.

At no time can you go over 12 scholarships. At the end of the season, you can choose to keep the walk-on by giving them a scholarship for their remaining season(s) or let them go at the end of the season. When letting a walk-on go you will be given your normal recruiting budget per open scholarships. When a player is released they will return to the player pool if they have seasons still available.

Redshirting

You may exercise an option to redshirt one player per season who is in their first two seasons of eligibility (Freshman or Sophomore season). A coach can only redshirt one player per season and a player can only be redshirted once during their career. While on redshirt that player will still be considered one of your 12 scholarship players unless you cut him.

Players missing seasons from WIS database

If a player is not in the WIS database for a season he will lose a season of eligibility (unless you redshirt him). That player will return to your team the next season they are in the WIS database if within the first 4 seasons (or 5 season if redshirted) unless you cut him.

Salary cap/ wavier/ rookies/ trades

There is no salary cap, waiver wire, or trades.

Rookies will be available for you to use in case you run into any minute issues. Rookies will be set to the highest fatigue and lowest performance.

Benefits of this Progressive

·         Never an incentive to tank

·         Change your team fortunes quickly

·         Lots of strategies

·         Recruiting can be done during the season(quickly move thru off season)

·         No more drafting a player you don’t want just because he is the best player on the board you control recruiting

I'm fully committed to seeing this progressive thru 20 season. I will setup a private form and will likely have a website set-up as I have done in the past for progressives to keep track of players/stats.

I'm interested.  A lot to process and I will have some questions, may need clarifications in certain areas.

First question of probably many:  if several people max bid for a player several rounds in a row, what happens?  Let's say me and two other people max bid for Kevin Garnett 8 straight times.  Are we just going to keep bidding ad infinitum until someone blinks?

Tarheel, Thanks for your interest. If there is still a tie after two rounds then then I will likely go to a lottery site to pull random numbers to break the tie (we are not going to drag it out). So a tie can only last two rounds.

Any ties on minimum bid players ($1) will automatically be broken and awarded to an owner without going to a second rd. of bidding.

Thanks.

I'm wondering why the 25% of budget limit for any one player?  I think there would be fewer ties and more strategic approaches if you were allowed to spend as much as possible on any one player (i.e., if you have $1000 for 12 schollies, you can bid up to $989 on one player, leaving $11 to fill the other 11 schollies).  Or at least raise the limit past 25%.  My guess is, with the 25% limit, you're literally going to have all (or most) of the league max-bidding for the studs who are available, at least in the initial draft, so you're going to be randomly assigning a guy like Garnett to one of the 20 owners who bid $250 on him.  That would be slightly less of an issue in subsequent drafts, since people would have different numbers of schollies available, but my guess is you'd still have a lot of people with 6 open schollies and therefore the same problem.  But if you allow bidding essentially all--or at least 75%--of your available budget, people would need to think a lot more carefully about that.

This is a great idea, by the way--I don't mean to imply by my questions that I don't like it, just want to make sure it's executed as well as possible.

This sounds ridiculously awesome shine.  I LOVE the idea.  I am starting a new job next week so maybe can't commit but I reserve the right to join down the road.

The reason why I have a 25% limit is kind of protecting yourself from yourself. Forcing you to spend on other players. In this league if you go all in you could end up with nothing. There is no safety blanket (high lottery picks) for poorly run teams. On the other hand with teams only having players for 4 seasons fortunes can change quickly. One other item I put in place is the first round of recruiting you state who you are going to recruit. This way if you see 20 owners are going after Garnett you might think twice and only spend $1 on him. I would certainly be open to changing it, I would just hate to see a bunch of owners waste their whole budget and not competing on other players. At the end of the day only one team can have him.

I appreciate the feedback. I have given these rules a lot of thought before posting this league but love the dialogue.
