Hoops Dynasty – College Basketball Sim Games - Game Boxscore - Colorado vs. Stevens Tech.

I just had a national championship caliber team lose in the second round... by 17... the only thing I can come up with is that I went -5, I did that because the other team did not shoot any threes. I have an elite D3 defensive team, and they shot over 50% all inside the ark with me going -5. Also we tied in rebounding, with me going -5 and having far surperior rebounding. Moral of the story, playing minus defense is evil.

Worst advice in awhile

That SIM is stunning. But why -5?

Minus defense isn’t inherently good or bad, even at extremes. It’s a tool as part of your overall plan. I played -4 with a 2-3 base, which is arguably even more extreme. The setting of the defense isn’t simply about defending 3s, though I realize many use the % attempts behind the arc as a quick starting basis for setting, I do it as well. You’ll notice from the pbp, we hit a lot of jumpers, which was basically what I intended. Jumpers and free throws.

I got a favorable sim, no doubt. It’s not like I was expecting to win by 17. I figured it would be close, and I figured I had a decent chance at the upset. The free throw discrepancy accounts for a bit of that, though not all.

minus settings dont lose games, coaches lose games by using them in the wrong way

FWIW, I almost never go beyond -3. I've had very unpredictable outcomes, particularly related to short-minute foulouts. Things seem to play out more regularly between +3 and -3.

I'll stay between +2 and -2 myself. Unless I am a huge underdog and it doesn't matter and I'm trying to get lucky or there's a clear reason to go 3 or more in one direction, but it has to be some glaring weakness on the other team.

I understand the thought to go -5 when a team doesn't shoot a lot of 3s. But when i use a mental picture of -5, i think of all 5 defensive players staying in the paint basically. And even if a team shot zero 3s the entire season, if all 5 of your defenders are in the paint, that's still easy to exploit and defeat, i would think. FTs are always a factor, as others have mentioned.

And i know TJoe loves this, and I'll say it for him... Never and always are not good words to use when offering opinions on strategy.

Yes. Basically, the easy cheat is to go by how many 3s they shoot as a percentage of overall attempts. The more advanced tactic is to see if you can predict where their scoring will come from. If a good chunk of their scoring is from guards without significant LP tendency, even if they don’t shoot 3s, going deep in the negative may not make sense, unless you have something else up your sleeve like a well placed doubleteam, or a perimeter stopper to bring in from the bench.

I’m out of the country in hotels with spotty WiFi, led to me not having the time I would normally spend on gameplanning. My teams average defensive rating is 75 at D3, that’s not a team that should be shot 51% against. I always seem to get upset when I go minus defense, especially past -2.

what would you guys have done for my gameplanning?

i rarely to minus D for this reason, but after seeing no threes I quickly decided it was the perfect time to do it, I feel stupid

Only the sith speak in absolutes.

Generally speaking, teams the rely on athleticism and FTs to score, slow down and -1 are a good place to start in game planning.

Honestly, this result is a mix between three things in order of importance

1) A bad SIM, which happens, don't get one in the final game of the NT... It's even worse.

2) Great coaching by Shoe, yeah he scouted your team well;

3) -5, not your best idea when you look at the shots Shoe's team takes.

Defensive positioning used to mean someone before Seble fcked with it. When a team is so incompetent shooting 3s (or chooses not to) a -5 defense should work. But you can add that to the lost of things Seble has fcked up with this game.

MonsterTurtl went -5, not Seble. Next you'll blame Obama.
