RPI is Bad (Not Rigged) Topic

Please take the time to look over both of the teams I’m about to post and tell me how the heck Rochester has a higher RPI than my team, Nazareth.

Nazareth:

Rochester's opponents have a better win/loss record than Naz.

You really cant control this when you schedule so many SIMS. You also cant see this directly from the 2 teams schedules.

Mully, you must be mixing the teams up. I’ve scheduled no sims and he’s scheduled all sims.

(All ranking and RPI are shown as current) I’ve beaten #7 Mary Washington (6th RPI), California, Santa Cruz (37 RPI), New York City Tech (12th RPI), #1 NYU (13th RPI), and my only loss is to #4 Brandeis (2nd RPI) on a buzzer beater floater.

He’s scheduled all sims. Only one has an RPI over 60. That one team has an RPI of 9 but that team (Westminster) has played no one good either.

I just don’t understand how he has a higher SOS or RPI than me. I understand how Brandeis does, but I should be #2 RPI.

Early RPIs are notoriously unreliable. Your question is valid but I wouldn't sweat it.

ETA: Their future schedule is much tougher than yours. I wonder if WIS's formula looks ahead.

Yes Sports I mixed the two teams up but the answer is still the same. Its the part of the RPI equation that you have no control over. If you don't know the formula, its listed here on the site under one of the help pages.

I totally butchered this answer. I should have typed.

Hope that makes it clearer.

Yeah my conference is terrible.

It’s not just the RPI, it’s the ranking system too. Trentonjoe has been a ton of help to me and I read a lot of his stuff on the forums, but with all due respect, I think I should be ranked higher.

We have the same record. I have the better SOS, 14 to 36. I beat him head to head. I have higher RPI. Doesn’t make sense.

I see SOS of 8 for Rochester and 14 for Naz.

14 to 36 is me and NYU who’s ranked 1.

Isn't there a tournament at the end of the year to settle all this?

Rankings have a certain amount of momentum. Initial rankings are based entirely on team composition/quality. Early season rankings still have a significant component of this wrapped into them from this inertia of the season-beginning rankings. The reason NYU is ranked so highly is because of their talent. The reason I'm ranked so low in spite of my #1 RPI and #8 SOS is because my team is crap. The assumption - reasonable - is that in the long run teams will tend toward their talent level unless there is compelling evidence to suggest otherwise. NYU is a good team and they haven't picked up any bad losses, so they'll remain highly-ranked for a while.

You are also currently the #1 overall seed. NYU is like 6. I looked this morning.

This helps. Thanks man. Also, I’m not trying to rip on your team, just ripping on RPI.
