OK...I AM a senior citizen, so what the heck is "Discord"?

Think of it like a large group chat. This large "group chat" now has over 450 members as of this morning. If you want to talk about HD with a bunch of like minded people, download it and join! Everyone there is more than willing to help you set it up.

remember about 6 months ago when we were talking about your team, and we suffered a bit trying to get screen shots to each other and to have a good place for back and forth communications? that is what discord is for - its a really quality tool used for all that kind of stuff. i think it was mostly for voice chats, like a free group chat product gaming folks used, in the beginning (at least that is how i learned of it years ago), but it has all kinds of stuff now. i might have mentioned it to you once, actually, but i don't think there was an HD discord then so its much more valuable now.

folks here in HD use primarily the group text chat functionality, there's a bunch of group chat rooms (text based not voice) folks can post in. you can also send direct messages for 1-on-1s, and you can paste screen shots right in very easily.

i think you'd find discord was not that hard to use, once you got it set up. but i do think the initial setup and learning curve would be a bit of a struggle. its probably worth giving a shot to see if you run into much trouble or not, the conversations about teams are just so much easier and more productive with a good tool like discord.

discord seems like a better tool - but I dont get how it is organized - dont see distinct threads on topics....must poke around more

It is a shame that WIS is directing interesting discussion away from its own forums....

If WIS wants to attract more young folks, Discord is a great way to do it. Like gill said, its much easier to post pictures and media. You can get instant notifications if anyone responds to you. You can chat with someone in real time.

With that said, I'll still be using the forums, but Discord is a much better way to build a community.

discord is definitely a more real time medium. the forums you can come 2 days later and see the threads and pick a few to read or post in. that doesn't really work with discord. kinda depends on the kind of community you have or want to foster, to some extent, i think. reddit is still big with young people, i don't see why they needed to move away from the forums. i think discord would have served well as a 'chat now' supplement more than a full replacement. just my 2 cents, i'm happy to see activity of any kind i suppose?

For those asking, I left because I don't particularly care for the actions of one coach. We're all here (/there?) to help with the game and to enjoy conversations. I didn't join with intent to be belittled.

I LOVE a good argument! And I can dish it out as much as I can accept it back. But one coach in particular is an ***. And it's a shame because he's also one of the most helpful in the game besides myself. Arguing is one thing. Being a jerk is another.

It is also true what someone said, that I'm not interested in returning, simply because it's gigantic now. I don't mind talking in small groups. Keeps it fun. I don't have the desire to talk with 300 people, basically every coach in the game. Just a personal preference.

I'm always still willing to help. I'm on the mentor list. I've talked with most of you at some point. Feel free to reach out anytime if you'd like!

I'll stick to the Forums when needed. Don't need the level of particiipation Discord brings.

forums were becoming dead - the encouragement of discord puts a fork in it

unfortunate for those who enjoyed the discussions and learning here. My taste of Discord so far is that it is less organized and requires more involvement to figure out. I will visit when motivated to do so, but I wont browse and comment there routinely. A loss of value for the activity in my eyes as a user.

There is my first time checking the forums in probably a month and I couldn't disagree more, I love the discord app and it literally serves the same purpose these forums do. You can post a topic and you get real-live responses from a lot more coaches than you'll get in the forums.

Also, there is a search function in the discord so just like the forums you can search to see if a topic has already been discussed at one point.

Additionally, to the point you don't want to talk to 500 coaches, or the "level of participation", no one is forcing anyone to talk in Discord, you can come and go as you please just like the forums. Turn off the notifications and when you are bored or want to talk about something, pop open the discord instead of forums. I don't see why the resistance.

Lastly, the WIS staff is actually active in the discord app as well and you can get real-time discussion on upcoming changes and voice your opinion. Honestly, I literally see no downside and think these forums are basically old news.

The forums have been dead for a while, to be perfectly honest. Discord has been a great tool to reinvigorate discussion in the community. I have been a part of plenty of forum boards in the past, while they have their charm, discord adds another level to it, making discussion 10x easier and more streamlined. No one is forcing anyone to join, but I disagree with the notion that it is "too crowded", or that you don't want to speak to 500 coaches at once. It's more nuanced, and the majority of users are not constantly chatting.

In short, I see why people don't like the forums dying, but the fact of the matter is that they just kinda are. To address a previous point, I disagree that discord is "taking away" from discussion on the forums. The forums have been floating adrift for a while. Discord is just another medium where we can discuss HD.

I will work on getting accustomed to Discord in light of these comments - I bet my befuddlement there is mostly about it being new to me.

Anyone got tips on how best to explore, search, manage HD Discord?
