New - 1969 Franchise Progressive (FULL) Topic

This league will be a 16 team progressive starting in 1969. All owners will choose a franchise that was available in 1969. Each team will name 17 keepers off their team’s real life roster. Only players who were full season players may be kept. Once we are full and all keepers named, we’ll have an 8 player draft to finish out rosters. The player pool will consist of players from the other 8 teams not chosen, all split season players, and the players who were not named as keepers.

Once the draft is finished, we’ll hold our inaugural season. At the conclusion of season one (and all subsequent seasons), teams will name their keepers and cuts for the upcoming season. There will be a 6 round draft held to pick up all rookies, cuts, and other available players. However, prior to the draft, each team will be allowed to protect one “franchise rookie” if they choose. If a team opts to do this, the player will be deemed to be their first round pick. In order to do this, the player must be a full season player in their rookie year. For our purposes, a player’s rookie year is his first WIS eligible season.

Initial draft order will be based on keeper salary of each team’s 17 keepers. At the end of each of the first three rounds, draft order will be recalculated based on the updated salary amounts. After that, draft order will snake back and forth. Rounds 1-4 will be 1 player/pick and the final two rounds will be 2 players/pick.

Future drafts will be done the same way, except draft order will only be recalculated after rounds 1-2. The first five rounds will be one player/pick and the final round will be a finish up round, allowing teams to draft enough players to fill out the rest of their roster.

Other rules are as follows:
  • No salary cap
  • League format is WIS Alt E
  • League Alignment is as close to real life as possible
  • No DH, no AAA, no WW, and no clones
  • Trades are allowed / injuries off
  • Transaction deadline enforced
  • Must use your team’s real life ballpark

NOTE - Since I chose my team first, I will pick last in all 6 rounds. The Cards are my team and I can’t pick another franchise. They weren’t anything special in the 70’s so it shouldn’t be any big advantage that I picked them first, especially considering I am picking last each round.

I’d like the amazing Mets but for rookies what do you mean by full time players.

Glad to have you!

Full season players played for only one team in a given season. A split season player played for 2+ teams and there is a separate version of that player for each team. Therefore if we allowed keeping split season players then the same player could be kept by 2 different teams.

Are future draft orders determined by keeper salary as well?

I’ll jump in with Oakland tentatively depending on answer to above.

That is the plan but I am open to alternative options…..

Follow up questions: Are teams required to list 17 keepers from their team? Looking at the teams, there's a stark drop off from the top 8 teams and the bottom 8 teams in regards to both current and future talent. Weaker teams could benefit from being able to add additional players from the expanded player pool of the 8 cut teams and split season players.

For the inaugural and future draft order - it could be Keeper salary/keepers so that teams can't manipulate the draft by cutting all but a few studs in order to get the #1 pick. I like that it's not win floor based/lottery though and you can consider my tentativeness removed.

Great, glad to have you!

The rationale of choosing 17 players is to keep the draft short. I hate long drawn out forum drafts. I am not a fan of win floors and lotteries either. I was hoping by drafting according to keeper salary that some of the weaker teams can catch up by getting picks that are front loaded in each of the first few rounds.

With the 17 Los Angeles Dodgers that I have designated team salary is $66.5 Mil. $61.5 Mil.
