The amateur draft is coming up in one of my leagues and I found this guy. His are some of the strangest hitting ratings I've ever seen. His D ratings will make him a decent defensive SS.

If you can't see his projections, they are

Speed 98, Contact 92, Power 57, vL 0, vR 18, Eye 100, BR 78.

How can a guy project to such high contact and eye, yet have some of the worst splits I've ever seen? What would be a typical offensive season for a guy like this?

below .100 BA, OBP near .300?

Not quite the same but this guy was productive enough for my S1 team in JB:

I favor strong defensive shortstops with great speed and baserunning, even if their offensive numbers completely suck.

Not quite as good as your guy, but somewhat similar.

And 100 speed. If he had good defensive SS ratings (he doesn't) I'd play him at ML SS right now, and expect something like a .225/.330/.280 line with 30 SB. Well worth it in my mind (again, IF he had the D).

Well, here's a guy in one of my leagues.

Contact 48, Pwr 89, vL 10, vR 63, Eye 60.

He's at AAA and hitting very well & crushing RHPs. But even with that vL 10, he's hitting .236, .458 Slg with 6 HRs vs LHP in 72 ABs. That's not the disaster you might think he would be. Now wouldn't Urbina(above) with vR 18, and much better Contact and Eye be at least serviceable vs RHP?

These are Urbina's defensive projections. I think he would be a pretty decent SS. With his 98 Spd & 78 BR, he would probably steal a fair number of bases.

Ovr83, Rng 87, GL 83,Arm 100, Acc 87

Everything about this guy would scream All-Star if it wasn't for those horrendous splits. He still might be useful as an occasional v RHP SS, defensive replacement and pinch runner.

Must have been a pretty down season for LFs in that league.

With that speed, contact, and eye rating, I'd suspect he'd get 40 infield hits and probably hit about .250/.375/.325. I found a couple of Billy North seasons ('79 and '80) that are about right.

I'd guess that he would walk a lot, would not K very often, but would be limited to infield hits and the occasional line drive.

So if you give him 500 ABs, maybe he hits .180-.200, with an OBP of .300-.320, and a SLG of about the same. But he might steal 30-50 bases and score a decent number of runs.

But the guy projects to 57 Power! That ought to be worth more than some IF hits and an occasional line drive, shouldn't it? My gripe with this guy is that it seems very incongruous for a player to have CN & BE ratings that high and have splits that awful. It just doesn't seem to go together. And that brings up the other question of which is more important, CN & BE or splits? I'm tempted to try and draft him just to see what kind of player he'll turn out to be.

This guy is in my one world (Summer of 49), let's disregard that vsL. versus righties though he is a little similar to your guy, except the power and contact are transposed

here are his slash numbers vs righties in Hiram Bithorn (0,+2,0,+2,+3)

.317 /.421 /.748

quite impressive, although i think given low splits (below 30) i'd rather have great power and average contact than great contact and average power

my guess for a slash line would be .280/.360/.320
9/25/2009 7:25 PM
My guess-- .180/.320/.330. If the rest of your team will allow you to be aggressive on the bases this is a valuable player; otherwise he's playable until he gets expensive. If he bats or switch hits he might even be truly good against RHP (.220/.360/.390).
