I was bored/interested so I decided to take a look at my first 8 drafts in Moonlight Graham. We're almost thru with S13 so I figured that would be a good indication of whether or not they were going to contribute at the BL level.

The results(I only counted signed players):
First round-14 picks/11 pros
I have 5 active pitchers(2886 IP and counting), 5 active PP(6380 AB and counting) and 1 retired PP(1994 and apparently done)

Second round - 11/9
Three active pitchers(1667), 4 active PP(6027) and 2 retired PP(3257)

Third round - 8/6
Four active PP(753), 2 retired PP(717)

Fourth round - 7/4
2 active PP(3202), 2 retired PP(2405)

Fifth round - 7/1
1 active PP(23) getting his first action as an expansion call-up

Sixth round - 8/3
1 active pitcher(260), 2 active PP(1832)

Seventh round - 8/1
1 active PP(12) as a defensive replacement

Two things jumped out at me. 1. I'm obviously not getting any pitching after the 2nd round. May be me, may be the world but, other than the LRB I'm using from the 6th round, they just don't exist. 2. I drafted a lot of AB out of R4. However, they were C/1B/DH-types and two of them came before we could manually rank players(5000 of the AB came from them). The 6th round PP are also C/1B/DH-types.

That you got that much out of your 4th and lower round is pretty good. I usually don't rank players expected to go after the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

I rank anyone who I think could one day be a BL player. I was curious because I wondered if I was wasting time attempting to develop 3rd-5th rounders. Since I've got 11 players in 8 drafts from those rounds, I'd say I'm not.

Well, crap, this didn't go anywhere. I was sort of hoping a few others would do similar research so I'd have an idea where the "cut-off" for developing future BL might be.

From my numbers, it looks like rounds 1-3 are worth developing and even 4th rounders stand a fair chance of being something. 5th-7th picks look like a crap shoot.

Go ahead and check my teams for me.

Thanks in advance.

You draft like crap and, if they're not top 10 picks, you screw 'em up.

You're welcome.

OK, Mr. Kettle.

Thanks for your feedback.

Uh, looks like about 80% of my first 3 picks make the bigs. And, historically, I'm picking in the 20s.

Hell, over 50% of my 4th rounders hit the bigs.

More a function of that retarded division of yours where sub-ML talent is still adequate to win the division.
10/14/2009 4:18 PM
Ha, funny you should say that. Two of my 4th rounders got playing time with teams from YOUR division. 'tard.

Sparky doesn't even think my first round choice from last season is capable of starting at High A.

I shudder to think what research would show.

I got about 3 minutes into doing my research and got bored ... or maybe something came up at work ... either way, I didn't bother to finish it

You should know that you're responsible for a 7th rounder getting a cup of coffee.

I started to look at mine, but then I got depressed at how bad I was at drafting in the early days...
