Rookies ask, Vets answer Topic

If you're a new player (or a veteran player with a question), send it to me via sitemail.

If you've a veteran player willing to answer some questions, send me a sitemail.

As questions come in, I'll answer some myself and farm alot of them out to other coaches, and I'll keep a running Q&A in this thread. When it starts to build up, I'll try to keep it categorized, etc.

I'm hoping that A). this can become a bit of a one-stop shop for some of the more common questions (as well as more complex ones) and B). it will help newer players connect with vets, learn HD and and make the game better for everyone.

Fire away ...

EDIT: After getting sitemails from a bunch of vet coaches w. in just a few mins of posting, I'm now thinking (and Z suggested as well) to have multiple coaches answer the same question (or at least some of the questions; probably not necessary for ones that are more basic and straightforward. Think that would be very interesting.

I dont think a bump is needed 20 minutes after the thread was made.. and yeah its a good idea.

i like the additional idea... would love to see those multiple answers, too, if it can be done in a condensed way.

Q: I just moved to DII ... what do you think is the main difference between D2 and D3 recruiting?

-giesen5

A1: I approach both the exact same way.

In either division, you're not going to find a 'perfect' player. Only a set of players that have slight flaws. The flaws being more glaring at D3. The goal is to find the player that best suits your situation.

A great example of this is D3. It's extremely hard to run a M2M defense in D3, because D is a major deficiency for many recruits.

Good Luck!

A2: I think recruiting in DII and DIII are essentially very similar. Obviously you're going after better players at DII, so the guys shouldn't have as many holes in their game as the DIII players.

I think that in DII, since you have a bigger budget, it's easier to recruit nationally. So if you're used to local recruiting, I would cautiously start to extend your reach.

I would add for D2 recruiting to not neglect international players. In D3 they aren't a factor, but in D2 you can find some studs internationally, so don't forget to check out those guys. However it's even more important to avoid battles for international recruits for obvious reasons.

Q: I am wondering what the best class distribution is (6-0-6-0, 5-1-5-1, 4-2-4-2, or 3-3-3-3), and why?

Thanks!

-apollo7

A1: Depends on level and how long you think you are going to be staying at said school. I have never been a huge "keep the classes equal" guy and usually let the talent available dictate what my recruiting plan looked like.
If the job that you are currently recruiting for is just a short-term, step-up job, I would fill all my 'ships and not worry about setting up your classes.

At D2/3 dynasty I would go with 4-2-4-2 if I had to choose one, reasoning being my personal preference is to have about 4 'ships a season to recruit for as it gives me the best money to recruit with and I only ever need to rely on 2 freshmen max getting solid playing time. At D1, I'd say keep it with the 4-2-4-2 if possible but remember you don't HAVE to fill all of your 'ships, you can be very successful with only 10 or 11 players.

A2: Truthfully I never really shot for any 'particular' distribution I just played what I had. Personally I'd stay away from 6-0-6-0 because I always like to have a senior or two on the team.

Where'd the other "a" go? That's MY question. (Are you stockpiling them? Hording them? Is there an impending shortage? Do you know something the rest of us don't?)
