Ranked players at D2 Topic

I know this has been discussed a bunch of times, but since there is no search function on the forum (or it's well hidden from me) I'll ask again. Approximately what is the highest ranked player you can recruit for each position at an A+ D2 school? The highest ranked player I've signed is the 135th C. I'm assuming that's about as high as I'm going to get with Cs, is it about similar for all positions or can I get even higher ranked players at other positions or is it lower?

Might be able to do slightly slightly better ~120 at SF.

It completely depends. Every season is a little bit different. Generally I find that SGs/SFs will be your best bet for a highly rated guy. It can also be different based on how far away they are. At an A+ D2 school the best I've signed recently (since changes to recruit generation/low-major recruiting in DI) is a C in the 120s and a PF in the 130s. I've also had Juco2s in the 90s willing to talk to me, but I've never signed them.

its kind of wild how much it changes from season to season. last time i checked, the most dropdowns were sfs, sgs, pgs, pfs, and then cs. this last season in tark, it was sfs, sgs, cs, pgs, then pfs. i would have thought the position order wouldn't have changed... i wonder what the deal is? is it based on the # of recruits generated at each position, maybe?

it seems the ranking you could sign has gradually went down over the past couple years, anyway. i remember a bunch of 1 star guys being willing to talk to me, i think rails even had 2 stars. now, no 1 star will talk to me ever, unless hes within 70 miles (or not a freshman, but i basically ignore those).

and, i remember also signing guys like 120-130cs, and 140pgs, and stuff like you guys are saying - but lately, those are out of the question. this season, i tracked it for my d2 team, who has about the best prestige possible (3 titles and a final 4), and i could only talk to:
120-123sf, 145-149sg, 155-161c, 170-173pg, 181-188pf

i didn't narrow the range down to single players but i tried to get it pretty small. so those ranges are the possibilities of the highest ranked guy who would talk to me (so for like 120-123 sfs, the 119 sf would not talk to me, and the 123 would, and i didn't ask the 120-122).

Thanks guys. I used your D2 team that you're talking about billyg as a barometer for what I might be able to go after and I saw the rankings of the guys and it kind've surprised me. I wonder if they are lowering the ceiling for what D2 schools can get or was it just a random thing. I'll be finding out shortly as I'm going to aim high and see if I get shot down.

Thanks for posting the question, kmason. And thanks to the coaches who responded. I was wondering the exact same thing. I just got bumped up to an A+ and only have one scholly to fill.

a while ago, the # of total recruits seemed to drop, about 10% or so. maybe the recruits we could talk to dropped with it?

one thing i've always wondered is how much 70 miles gets you. i think mniven's 148pf is about as far as i've seen, considering we could only talk to the 181-188 pf otherwise... do you guys think it gets better than that?
11/13/2009 3:24 AM
Not much. Also keep in mind that the closer you are w. in the 70-mile range, the more effective (i.e. the #150 kid may talk to you at 10 miles, but the #155 kid may not at 70).

Last time in Allen, I could get better-ranked pg's to talk to me than sg's, which is rare.

Just to correct something I said in the OP, the #135 ranked guy I signed was a PF (Randy Smith on Bryant). Pretty sure he was only 10 miles away.

When I was with NY Tech in Knight, the highest guy I've had talk to me was a Juco who was ranked 36th. He, of course, was signed before he dropped to me. I have signed a SF Freshman ranked 109, in LIUS in Tark, way back. Rails signed a guy in the 90's during that same time when he was winning the D2 NT every season.

Since every season is different, you really just have to send them a phone call and see if you are a back up option or if you have no chance. If you like someone who is close and you are a backup, go all in. I don't track recruiting numbers, but I've signed lots of guys in the 140s and maybe a couple in the 130's. SF seems to drop the fastest, but not every year.

Another key is that rankings currently aren't taking into account potential, so you can find many unranked players who are better than many ranked players because of their potential.
