Doe you make changes in playoffs? Topic

Does anyone make any strategy changes when they reach the playoffs? Pitch counts, Call bullpen? Anything?

I'm playing a division rival and looking for an edge?

Anybody?

Yes, I make changes especially in pitching and on offense who I platoon.

You can run a 4 man starting rotation, or even 3

I uncheck the "Use Player Rest if winning/losing by" option.

It's the playoffs. No time for rest.

Probably obvious, but....

Ignore rest entirely for position players. If a guy's at 92%, who cares? Play him.

Same deal, within reason, for SPs. Starting your ace at 98% in a clinching game isn't a huge deal to me. Win or go home.

Has anybody shortening to a 3-man rotation experimented with using tandems to limit SP pitch counts and control the first man in from the bullpen? I'm heading into my first playoffs with a staff whose 6 best pitchers are all starters. There's also a clear top 3, and second 3. I've been toying with the idea of pitching 3 tandems, 1 top tier guy and 1 second tier guy each, with strict pitch counts for the first guy, and try to get these 6 guys to pitch every inning (or as close to that as possible). I could carry an extra glove/pinch runner if I did this. Do you think it's doable?

Probably.

I've done that when I only had one RP I trusted, and knew he could go a couple of innings.... knowing that if he came in in the 4th, I was probably pooched, anyway.

I've done the 3-man thing, too.

In winning my last WS, I used 1, 2, 3A/3B because I didn't trust either of my #3 pitchers. High PC, quick hook for both.

To answer the OP, yes, I shorten the leash on pitchers, remove the If winning/losing actions, shorten my pitching staff and carry an extra specialty player or two.

Go to a 3 or 4 man rotation, move your 5th starter to LRA (or LRB) and drop your worst relief pitcher off the playoff roster. For your 25th man, call up a specialty player like MikeT23 alluded to. A good example is a guy with 95 speed, who can be used strictly as a pinch runner, a defensive SS, or a 3rd catcher. Another example could be a LOOGY with 4 stamina who you would never use in the regular season due to his limited pitch counts, but he could be useful in a short series. Most people think you should up the pitchers pull rating too (like going from a 1 to 2 or 3), but I haven't made the playoffs enough times to experiment with that.

I considered editing, but didn't want to deprive anyone of that line. :)

I would go with a 3 man rotation of your best SPs. Of the other 3 I would use the 2 best as SUA and the other as LRA. That is, if they are better than your regular SU & LR guys, which it sounds like they are.
