Anti-Poaching Incentive? Topic

I have an idea and wanted your thoughts:

No one likes when teams enter the recruiting battle for a kid in the last 2-3 cycles. It's a valid strategy but I think it's unfair for the "new" school to be on equal footing with a school that's been recruiting a kid for a beginning.

To make things more interesting, what if school's got an "interest" bonus for every dollar they spent on a kid each week thereby incentivizing teams to spend big early.

This would not stop late recruitment but it would make it a dicier proposition. I also think it would be a more realistic reflection of real life (though poaching happens there, too) where you build a relationship with a recruit over many years.

Thoughts?

(Disclaimer: Yes I got poached. Yes I'm bitter. But, I don't think that changes the merits of the idea and it's something I'd been pondering before this).

I'm pretty sure youi DO get extra credit for being in on a recruit early, anyone check me on that?

Personally how do you know you got poached? I usually don't put my heavy push until 2-5 cycles before signing. So he might have been building the whole time but never put in the 2 home visit or campus visit until late. You see it as poaching he sees it like me as just taking your time.

Its a strategy to not show up until the end. Not only will you not show your hand, but also if 3-4 schools show up that you know you can't beat you can back off and not have wasted so much money.

Poaching doesn't exist. People who call it poaching are acting like the "poacher" is doing something wrong. If you want to jump on a recruit late, you have a lot to overcome, if you overcome it, it means the coach who was originally on the player's list did something wrong. Don't burn all your money early in recruiting, if you're worried about being "poached" then conserve money so if you do have to battle you have the funds.

No such thing as poaching.

I'm sure you get extra credit for having a recruit consider you over a longer period. Check your "word on the street. You get "tighter" with your recruit as time passes even if you don't take any action. Deal with the "poaching" its part of the game and real life.

is this thread a practical joke?

SHHH-BANG! That's what I'm talking about! I was so excited to see you at the house, my momma had to hose down the carpet three times. She said she hadn't seen anybody so excited since the day they delivered grandpappy's Russian mail-order bride. She didn't speak a lick of English, but grandpappy didn't seem to mind. I'm not sure what she saw in him, but she must've seen something 'cuz they would go at it like two gophers at a carrot. Grandpappy died of some heart mischief later and his bride got all his belongings and money to soothe her aching heart. She's living in Beverly Hills now. She seems to be doing fine, but she won't return our calls anymore. Speaking of calls...how come you haven't returned any of my calls. I tried to call every hour to check on my status. I even found your home number, but something must be wrong, because it says its disconnected now. If you're having trouble paying those folks at the phone company, never you mind.

Why, once for about three years we had no phones 'cuz daddy couldn't get off'n his lazy butt to go get a job. He even tried doing one of them Wal-mart jobs of saying 'Hey, welcome to Wal-mart', but he kept messing it up. Momma had enough of that. She went out and got herself a new daddy. I don't see him much, but I think he must work all day, since he only comes by at night to call on momma and they go at it like pappy use to with his Russian gal. Funny though, he always sounds different, but momma doesn't mind only seeing him for a few hours every night. One time someone asked her what she did for a living and she said she was in the oldest profession - so I think she's a secretary or something. Anyways, you stop back, okay? Momma would love to talk to you again. She kept ranting about your pretty eyes, but I told her she must be crazy. I'll talk to ya later - when you get your phone undisconnected - and I can't wait to play for you

no apparently tanner stole a recruit from him so he posted this.... I just read the the story on the Pac 10 board in Phelan. I really love reading about poaching stories, they are great!

Wow! That is a lot of talk about 'poaching'. When I recruited for Indiansrck (2 seasons ago) I recruited a PF that he was recruiting late too and something like this was said too (although it was only 1 or 2 posts not 3 pages).

If you get 'poached' then you overextended during recruiting. It is as easy as that.

The best thing you can do as a coach is learn how to do it yourself so that you can learn what those that do recruit late look for.

My understanding is that is poaching when a school comes in on a recruit late who was already considering someone else. Whether there is anything wrong with that is to debate, but whether it exists, or there is "such thing as" poaching, is not.

It wasn't Tanner.

I'm not complaining about what happened here.

I didn't realize we got credit. Now I know. Cool.

That's all.
