If you went 29-0 including 18-0 on the road, 10 road non-conference wins including 4-0 against top 25 and had the #6 RPI, been ranked #1 for most of the season, wouldn't you expect a #1 seed?

They're a 2 seed. My former team, which I obviously shouldn't have yet.

Seeding makes no sense to me.

Had the same thing happen to me in Tark one season. 29-0, but due to a bunch of bad Sims in my conference, my RPI fell far enough that I ended up with a 2. W.Washington's RPI is good enough that he probably should have gotten a 1 though. Guess he'll just have to show the committee on the court!! :^)

The whole seeding for D2 Phelan this year was a bit weird, IMO.

media coverage for D2 is sparse. I blame east coast bias

I remember before the conference championships I was trying to gauge my chances as a #1 seed and had only Western Washington and St. Edward's as locks for #1 seeds, so I'm obviously surprised by them getting a 2 seed.

That's awful.

Seble? how does this stuff happen?

Looking into it further, looks like it was just a "tough call" for the engine. If you look, SOS appears to be the difference-maker and not overall RPI and not ranking at all.

The #1 seeds:
Wilmington: 26-4 Rank: #4 RPI: 4, SOS: 16, 21 straight wins.

Fayetteville St.
27-2, Rank #10, RPI 5, SOS 25. 10 straight wins.

Wisconsin Parkside
26-3, Rank #7, RPI 1, SOS 9. 10 straight.

St. Edwards.
28-1, Rank #9, RPI 2, SOS 34. 17 straight.

Two #2 seeds of note:
W. Washington
29-0, Rank #1, RPI 6, SOS 71. 29 straight.

Mercy (oldresorter)
27-2, Rank #2, RPI 8, SOS 35. 27 straight.

I made W. Washington's schedule as tough as I thought I could, just a few perennial powers were on bad years, hence the bad SOS. I withdraw my complaint.

This isn't really that hard to believe. WIS mainly bases seeding off of RPI...the team's RPI is 6 and that equates to a 2 seed. They need a new system, but under the current format, a result like this is unsurprising. FWIW, I've seen considerably worse seeding issues elsewhere.

I'm the #3 RPI team with the #2 SOS and didn't get a 1 seed. RPI is a big part, but in general a 29-0 team with a 6 RPI and the resume that W. Washington has will almost always get a 1 seed. This season there were legitamately 7 teams that were deserving of 1 seeds in Pheland D2 maybe that's why, and since they had the weakest SOS of the bunch they were dropped to a 2 seed.

No doubt it needs work, however given WIS' current format, its understandable.

That's besides the point. He's asking (and we're determining) if it makes any sense overall, and it doesn't. What's really befuddling is that usually the sim will err towards a great overall record even w. out a strong SOS (and it's not like he played all cream puffs ... he went 15-0 vs. teams that made the postseason). But a 26-4, 4 rpi team should not be seeded over his 29-0, 6 rpi team. That's stupidity.

But the "committee" takes all kind of factors into account, not just RPI (please note the sarcasm). When coaches see examples like this, is it really any wonder that the frustration sets in and decisions are made to spend their time and money elsewhere?

Not saying I support Trevor's (that's Colonels, for you who haven't been paying attention) system of rankings, as I'd like to see it used a couple of times before passing judgment, but it can't be worse than what HD has got. I don't think it's possible.
3/13/2010 9:48 AM
i am pretty surprised by this, even in the realm of HD seeding. i have had high record, low rpi teams a couple times, and they always get seeded immensely better compared to their rpi than my normal high sos, lower record type teams. i can't think of a single counter-example in my career, at least.
