I need advice. I had 39 players on my 40 man roster. so I had to place two players on waivers to remove them from the 40 man list. So far so good . Then disaster I couldn't access my computer for an extended period of time and the rule 5 freeze hit. Am I screwed? I have an awesome mentor but I know some of these actions are time sensitive and I may need to move quickly.

Nothing happens when the roster freeze hits. Not sure what you want to do(or what you're really asking) but it doesn't matter. Because you can't do anything.

Mike, I believe he wants to make more room so he can acquire more rule 5 players. Trouble is the freeze is on.

OK. Go to the Rule 5 Draft Order page. That will show you how many players are currently on your 40. If it shows 39, you can select 1 R5 player.

OK thanks stupid rookie mistake

Next time designate them. Takes them off the 40 immediately.

thanks mike I really don't want to screw up this team because of inexperience

Every successful HBD player once made a mistake because of inexperience that "screwed up" the team. I made more than one - more like 10.

It's not repeating those mistakes - and asking questions like the one in this thread - that matter.

Sounds like you're gonna be OK - you can draft one Rule 5 player and now you understand when to use "Designate" and when to use "Waivers".

excuse me folks my mentor is on and I think I'll listen a little more closely this time

Honestly, there will be 10-15 nice (I'm using that term very generously here) players in Round 1 of Rule 5, and only 1 or 2 in Round 2, so you're not missing too much.

In any decent world, at best there will be 2-3 usable Rule 5 players.

Yeah, if you don't have a top 5 pick, you're just getting roster filler. Low DUR/STM pitchers, SS who can't hit, defensive catchers or flawed hitters. In some worlds, you're getting nothing even with the first pick. I wouldn't fret over being unable to get a 2nd/3rd player from the R5 for very long.

That's kind of what I meant by very generously. 4-5 D Catchers, a couple of plausible platoon hitters, a couple of d-specialists, 3-4 SuB/LRB types, and 0-3 guys at the top who were unprotected by mistake. Every so often an okay starting Catcher. So, yeah, I agree.

I took over a team in Hamilton. 1st pick, never had a .500 record, just generally a bad team. I took 4 R5 guys in my first season. My starting SS(who was one of those mistake players), a SP who'll probably long relieve this season(13th pick), a SP who is now in AAA(20th pick) and a RP I traded last season who is in AAA now(26th pick).

That's what you can expect from the Rule 5.

Agree wholeheartedly with csherwood here. Any league that has more than a couple of good players exposed to Rule 5 has owners who just aren't paying attention. Also, there is plenty of time before the Rule 5 freeze kicks in to waive any players you need to get off your 40. It should be obvious who they are and there is no reason to wait til the last minute to do it.
