Thoughts on Awards Campaigning Topic

There's an owner in my HBD world that actively campaigns for his players when the awards nominees are released. He posts in the world chat several things that aren't included in the stats provided by WIS (i.e. "Player A was responsible for 40% of all of my team's offense this season. There isn't another player that did that much for his team...").

Admittedly, I don't have many players appear in the awards nominations. But the few that I have had, I have allowed their numbers to speak for themselves and haven't said a word in the world chat. I'm sure that my league-mates have the intelligence to make an informed decision on who they feel is the MVP/Cy Young/etc. and view this campaigning as the campaigner essentially saying "You're not looking at the right thing and your opinion is therefore wrong."

I wanted to get opinions from other HBD owners on this practice to see if I am out of line in expecting the other owners in my world to make the decision on their own.

I don't complain when someone campaigns. I just make a mental note to not to vote for the campaigner's player. Not saying that is right, but that is just my personal preference.

Why concern yourself with such a minor thing? If that guy thinks his player is more worthy than the next but the base numbers don't tell the story why, then he is well within his rights to 'campaign' for his guy. The guy isn't saying anything at all about other owners being 'wrong', you are making that assumption yourself. Sometimes a little nudge to look at something else can make the difference between player A and player B appearing more valuable. I don't see the reason for thinking that other owners aren't making their own decisions.

I think you may be misinterpreting. He's into the game and wants his fake players to garner awards. Seems like a good thing.

there is also the possibility that the individual brings up a point that i failed to consider. nothing wrong with informative banter.

It seems extremely helpful to have people campaigning for their players. In real life the voters look at all aspects of a player's performance when voting for these awards. But let's face it, most owners aren't going to take it upon themselves to do hours of research on all the candidates and do close examinations to determine which ones are the most deserving. Having owners campaign for their players allows them to summarize the major arguments for their players in a way other owners can digest quickly and easily and use to evaluate all the candidates in the most well-informed way possible. The voting page just displays the bare minimum-- stuff like HR, ERA, OPS, etc.-- but doesn't point out things like "This pitcher led the majors in quality starts" or "This guy's rate of stolen bases to attempts is one of the best in league history." Stuff like that may well sway voters, but isn't stuff the voters would have discovered on their own, so why not let the owners of the players involved (i.e. the ones who are most invested and most intimately familiar with their stats) do the educating? Doesn't seem like there is anything wrong with this at all, and if anything I think owners should be encouraged to campaign.

If they want to campaign for high demands from said fake player during contract time, freely allow them to.

Because, generally speaking, that's what major awards do.

Then how come you are campaigning for every one of your players in HJ?

Because it annoys everyone, and they don't vote for them as a result.

Nothing wrong with it all. I make no secret in my world chat if I have a candidate for one of the major awards that I'm sending the "home town" vote to my guy, even if I clearly don't feel that he's the best person for that award.

Still, in the end, it's trivial stuff. Though I do think that it's kind of cool that I have the reigning MVP in two of my worlds, and hope to complete the hat-trick in the third at the end of the current season.

I posted about one of my guys winning the triple crown. I think he was a MVP winner no matter what, but it's still pretty cool and worth noting from an interesting stats standpoint.

How much difference does that really make? I extended my 3-time MVP and best hitter at age 30 last season, and he's got enough awards that you have to scroll down on the Awards and Accomplishments page to see them all. He extended for a non-outrageous amount (22M/3 including bonus, frontloaded). I wonder how much the demands of equal-overall-rating players differ if one has a roomful of hardware and the other doesn't.

Truth.

Have you never argued the merits of awards candidates in real life? If HBD can make people as passionate about their teams as real baseball, then more power to them.

I'd just rather have an owner who fill up a page explaining why his 13 game winner should get the Cy Young as opposed to the owner who never even bothers to vote for the Cy.
