This guy is a former DITR. He's the favorite to win the NL ROY this season in Ron Cey.

I know that a lot of people think DITRs stink, but over the past 10 or so seasons, I've gotten maybe 15 DITRs (almost all RPs) who became legit prospects, and at least six of them have become major-league regulars.

That guy sucks.

He's not a good bet to ever duplicate those results, but a 3.63 ERA in 188 innings is not "suck". He's useful, he's replacement level overachieving, he got lucky...but not "suck".

The right combination of one strong rating, ballpark, and "career year" can result in some guys with below average ratings posting above average results.

I guess his pitch quality made up for mediocre splits. Sioux Falls had an above-average D, but the C had a below-average PC. I agree with soxfan that he probably won't duplicate his rookie success.

Nonetheless, he's a DITR done good.

I agree with danmam, I wouldn't let that guy be my bat boy. Congrats to him for having a good year but his ratings are just plain bad.

And look at his numbers besides ERA-- opponents are batting .282 against him and he has a 1.45 WHIP. Opponents are slugging .418 against him. And even those numbers seem artificially deflated. Frankly, in a neutral ballpark with average defenders, this guy looks like a sure bet to have an ERA in the 5's for his career. Good luck with him...

Although if Sioux Falls added a high-PC catcher, he might be a decent #5 SP. Not a star, but solid.
5/21/2010 12:25 PM
No, that guy would be a sub-par mop up man. He would be solid at AAA though...not a star, but solid.

Either the world itself sucks, or there must be absolutely 0 other real Rookies for that guy to win.
5/21/2010 4:14 PM
First off, he won't win. and the world doesn't "suck" by any means. He is just an example or a guy who was a flash in the pan because everything went right for him one year. The argument is not "oh look at this stud rookie tearing it up!!!", but rather wow, this DiTR still managed to put together a year that had simmy nominate him for ROY. No one is doubting his talent level, but in some cases, guys do well when they shouldn't (and vice versa)

If anything, this is one of the closest things to a RL DiTR because he came out of no where to have an unexpectedly good year, and come next year, will probably get blown away by.

I have seen a lot worse guys than this become ML regulars on bad teams, but I digress, it isn't a matter of talent. It's a matter of a crappy guy becoming less crappy and getting lucky.

And what credibility do you have? What with your stellar record and all...

Do you guys vote on ROTY based on ratings or actual stats? B/c if you're going off of ratings you're a clown.
5/21/2010 7:51 PM
We do it off stats. Doing it off ratings seems a bit odd.
5/21/2010 7:55 PM
I think the world ruled on whether he was any good or not when he cleared waivers.
5/21/2010 8:25 PM
That was revokable waivers, after the trading deadline.
