Today's Update: Changes to SP Pitch Counts Topic

From today's update:

Below are some other minor updates going out with this release.
  • Increased the min target/max pc from 5 to 40 for SPs
Does anybody else have a problem with this?  Where did this come from?  So now we're locked into to at least 40 pitches from a SP in every game?

I think its there to stop tandem trickery. Now you cant start left hander in t1a for 5 pitches and switch to your right hander for the rest of the game. And you are not locked into 40 pitches. If you set your pull setting to aggressive, he'll be pulled at the first sign of trouble. Good change.

Yeah that bugged me too. It does deter people from starting a LHP for 5 pitches and then replacing him with a RHP, but often I've set the Target to '0', set a max and let 'er rip.

Stops owners from the 5 pitch/switch pitcher for handedness strategy.

I'm assuming it came from people using tandems to throw a guy for a couple batters and then bringing in their "real" starter, who throws with the opposite arm, to screw with an opponent's platoon lineup.

This is just the target/max settings, I don't think the sim is suddenly going to start forcing a pitcher to stay out at least 40 even if getting shelled.

They didn't mention it but I would hope that if the starter is really crapping the bed and you had a 4-5 pull rating that the starter would be yanked.

Of course he would be yanked. The change only affects target settings.

it's a good change

there is the rare occasion where i'll end up with a starter going out there at less than 100% so i'll run him out on a short pitch count but follow him up with a pitcher who throws from the same side...and i'll let the other owner know i'm going to be short pitch counting him

this is very rare though and i'll happily give this up if we never have to see another owner running a lefty out there and switching him out 5 pitches in

I dont like it because occasionally I drop the ball and run out a fatigued SP.  If I notice, I will drop their pitch settings to five and put the guy I want to start out a long-A.

Don't drop the ball?

I don't like it for Spring Training. A lot of times I run my relivers out of tandem to get their innings at the beginning on ST, and some I wouldn't want to run out there for 40 pitches.

I agree with both new and Mike here-- I liked having that crutch, but really, it's my own damn fault when it happens.

Another place where the 5/5 PC came in legitimately handy is the situation in a playoff series where you want one guy to start the game after the next if you win the next game, and another guy to start if you lose (very common both in HBD and real life, most common in game 4 of a 5-game series).  In the past you could slot one pitcher, then set to 5/5 and switch to the other if you needed to, and if you let the opponent know what you're doing in advance it's not unethical IMO.  You just don't have any option for conditional starter choice in a playoff rotation any more.

Agree, it is going to be much more cumbersome to manage ST innings now

It appears that in tandems you can still set the pitch count at 5 on your starting pitcher. At least I am still able to.
