Instead of doing my normal rankings this year I decided to do an ODAC preview because the rankings got a little stale for me and this seemed like fun.  So here goes...

Guilford
metsmaniac2

Recruiting Review

In mets's second season he brought in four recruits and he said he was "really happy with it."  The first recruit was Edward a McMenamin, a point guard from North Carolina who shows tons of promise, especially on the offensive end.  He also brought in another NC recruit, Sean Harris, a Small Forward with the potential to score.  The final NC recruit, Quinn Rush, is easily the gem of this class.  He is a guy I'd expect to go to an A level team, but
mets nabbed him.  The final recruit that makes up this class is Frank Wallace, a fundamentally sound big guy.  Unfortunately, he has no athletic ability.

Prized Recruit: Quinn Rush
This guy is going to be an absolute beast.  I have no idea how a C- team got this guy.  He has good athleticism, very good rebounding, he'll be a fantastic defender, and he'll be a force down low.  How come I didn't sign this guy?

Season Preview

Despite the good class coming in, this will still be a tough year for Guilford.  They only have three upperclassmen, all of them sim recruited.  Look out for them in years to come, but I don't see them doing much this year.

Prediction: 11-15 (7-9)

Recruiting Review

Mike only brought in one recruit so this shouldn't be hard.

Prized Recruit: David Gonsales
He'll be a decent PF/SF combo in the FB/Press, but I don't think this guy is anything overly special.

Season Preview

After mike's worst season ever there's really no where to go but up.  They return 11/12 guys, which is crucial for the FB/Press.  They'll take a step up this year, but next year will be the year where they'll be back in the hunt for a deep run in the NT.

Prediction: 18-8 (12-4), NT

Recruiting Review

They threw all their $$ at a guy who went D2, so they won't be signing anyone this offseason.  They'll take two walk-ons this year.

Season Preview
They have been to the PI the last two years and they return 10 guys.  They have strong guards, but the big guys are questionable.  I think they'll be decent, but won't quite be able to get it done this season.

Prediction: 15-11 (10-6), PI

Recruiting Review
They filled both open scholarships with what look like good, not great, players.  Their first recruit Kent Tucker, a point guard from Virginia.  He won't be anything special, but he'll be a decent facilitator and he'll make a few shots, although the defense is a little concerning.  Their second recruit is Jeffrey Davis, a power forward from Ohio, profiled below.

Prized Recruit: Jeffrey Davis
I don't love Davis, but he'll be a good SF/PF guy.  He'll probably start out playing PF, but when his speed, ball handling, and passing get up to being decent, he should make a good SF.  If cat tries to get Davis's perimeter up, he should be a great scorer his senior year.

Season Preview
This year's ODAC favorite, they return ten players from last year's 60 RPI team.  They have good guards and a GREAT tandem of big men.  Calhoun continues the tradition of good EMU bigmen, following in the footsteps of Larry DeWitt and Thomas Haney.  He should lead them to many many wins this year.

Prediction: 24-2 (16-0), Deep NT run

Randolph-Macon
pumphead

Recruiting Review
With four open 'ships, they pulled in three players.  pumphead did say he might try to bring in another big guy, but with two cycles left to go in recruiting and no signs of a big man being interested, that looks unlikely.  The first of their recruits is Mitchel Mounts, a point guard from DC.  He shows offensive promise, but his starting defensive rating of 12 is a big concern.  Their second recruit is Samuel Wegner, a guy who looks like a rebounder and a shotblocker, but 33 LP with low potential doesn't exactly scream scorer.  The third recruit, Ronald Llanas, is profiled below.

Prized Recuit: Ronald Llanas
After a long battle that stretched from the 2nd cycle to a day after signings, Randolph-Macon finally (and questionably) beat out Roanoke.  Llanas isn't much of a scorer, but he'll be a hell of a player.  There is no doubt Llanas will be the best combo of athleticism and speed in the nation along with having very high defense, and good ball handling and just alright passing.  The biggest knock on Llanas is his stamina, which will make him a player who probably won't be able to play 25 minutes a game, but if that's the biggest knock on him he's probably pretty good.  I don't remember seeing anybody like him before in d3 so it'll be very interesting to see how he turns out.

Athleticism 71 High   Perimeter 18 Low
Speed 49 High   Ball Handling 41 High
Rebounding 8 Average   Passing 22 High
Defense 53 High   Stamina 68 Low
Shot Blocking 1 Average   Durability 62 Low
Low-post 1 Low   FT Shooting   Average

Season Preview
A young team with only two upperclassmen will probably struggle this year, but by the looks of their schedule their record should be decent.  A couple of their young guards look like potential studs, but their big men leave a lot to be desired.  Swayze looks look their best best to be a good rebounder, but with no one better than 64 rebounding, it looks like their zone will give up a lot of offensive rebounds this year.  Their hope is essentially pinned onto one player: David Poch.  He is a monster SF who will look to have an even better year than last year ascend to the title of greatest R-M player ever.

Prediction: 18-8 (11-5), PI

David Poch

Roanoke

Recruiting Review
Like Randolph-Macon, we only filled 3 of our 4 spots.  The strategy of jumping on four guys right away didn't exactly work out as about 3 cycles in 5k hand been flushed down the toilet.  We did lock up one of those guys early, but the other it was tough to see the other 3 go to places we couldn't contend with.  The other large chunk of recruiting money went to Ronald Llanas, who eventually signed with conference rival Randolph-Macon.  The first recruit we locked up was point guard Charles Murphy for North Carolina, who is profiled below.  The second recruit, picked up a couple cycles before signings, is a promising SF Wesley Chesnut.  Originally I saw him as too slow, but when his scouting repots came in with all those high-high potentials in the other categories, he was hard to pass up.  Our final recruit's signing was lost in the shadow of the Ronald Llanas signing which happened the same cycle, but no doubt he'll be good player with his high potential in both rebounding and shot blocking.

Prized Recruit: Charles Murphy
Murphy will be one of the fastest players on the Roanoke roster right away and he should keep getting better and eventually (hopefully) reach 90 speed.  Overall he looks to be a very promising recruit with no low potential anywhere.

Rebounding 3 Average   Passing 47 Average

Season Preview
After a strong season was ended early in the second round, Roanoke will look to bounce back.  Unfortunately, we don't bounce.  We will just lie there on the ground in our own self pity.  After losing two time CPOY David Algarin and one of the best PGs in the nation Jason Littlefield along with two other starters, there isn't much of a bright side.  There is only one senior on this squad and he won't even start this year.  We don't really have a star player, although it looks like Davis will probably get most of our shots because let's be honest, there really isn't anyone else to take them.

Prediction: 14-12 (9-7)

MVP: Aaron Davis

great write-up its interesting to see the thoughts on other recruits.  DARRELL Calhoun promises numerous "tea baggin' dunks" versus Roanoke for the mis-spelling of his name.   Darrell kids he is good like that.

Great job.  Thanks for the props on Quinn Rush too.  Joseph Brooks and Quinn Rush are gonna be a nice tandem in two seasons.

I think you were harsh on VW recruit Gonsales I think he will end up being a really good player.

nice job Tkim........

Nice job, Tkimble.  I agree with CJ though...I'm pretty high on Gonsales.  The rebounding is an obvious concern, but he's going to be a heck of a scorer.  Might even score some this season since his IQ came in at C+.
11/1/2010 12:04 PM
I'm looking at him and I still don't see how this guy will be a great player.  I guess we'll have to let it play out.
