signed a transfer who knows our defense well, and his core numbers are fine - but he is kinda sorta slow and cant touch the ball without turning it over - but I'm hoping he can play good defense, grab rebounds and enjoy his tiny distribution......will he be able to play a role with a SPD of 6?

Id use him with a low distro and he will be fine imo

Hope you also have another post who can score, if you do, the combo of a scoring post and a defensive post can work well.

I've had no problems with slow bigs. I had a 1 speed big lead my team in scoring, rebounding and FG%

so, we are 9 games into the season - playing against not too tough a schedule - here is how the guy is doing

Those stats are awesome. 

here are his stats before we see what he can do inthe NT - he has done really well - I am surprised - terrific per minute rebounds especially

his skills have improved as well - still slow, but not as totally awful slow

Overall, shows the power of ATH and - at least for me - says that for rebounding and blocks ATH matters a lot more than SPD

one more, his raw stats - we have his distro set low, so he takes fewer shots than he grabs ORebs

after the offseason, he has moved to 99s in REB and DEF - and his SPD up from 6 to 16.  I think his distro stays low, but hoping for even better performance on the defensive end and in rebounding at both ends.
