Defensive Freaks - How to evaluate? Topic

Over the last coupla of seasons in DIII, I've noticed a number of high ATH/high DEF types. These guys usually come equipped with a 30-ish SPD and one other 35-40-ish rating (LP/PE/REB)

The rest of their ratings are low to mediocre. My guy Jeffrey Damron is a guy like this:

Athleticism 85

Speed 26

Rebounding 39

Defense 89

Shot Blocking 29

Low-post 38

Perimeter 7

Ball Handling 19

Passing 19

Work Ethic 84

Stamina 93

Durability 31

What's the impact of guys like this? Too slow to play against guards. Doesn't have a high enough REB BLK and LP to be a threat down low. Does a guy like this just move his feet and contest shots? Or is this type of player an "overachiever," doesn't do anything well but makes the most of his limited ability through high athleticism?

put him at PF or C to defend their inside threat.

Is he worthwhile on offense at all? 80ATH/40LP vs 50ATH/70LP. Who's the better scorer.

With regards to defense, I guess my question is more like what kind of defense does a guy like this play? Sticks to his man like a glove so the offensive player doesn't get space and takes a bad shot? More likely to get steals based on his rating? Both?

I think his value doesn't show up in stats that are currently quantified but maybe looking at the play by play would help...

Opponents shooting %s will suffer when he defends them.  I think you can start him against good scoring SFs if they aren't too quick or PFs if you can afford the rebounding hit, but he mostly looks like a bench guy to me...

what's his free throw shooting like?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of this guy. I think he could defend a big man just fine, but his terrible reb is a detriment. And a lock of bl isn't great, either. I wouldn't trust him to defend anyone on the per due to lack of sp, and he's not a scoring threat. Just not a guy I would look at signing, to be honest.

Completely disagree with this as I said...  You can do it if they have a beast inside and you can somehow spare the rebounding, but in general I would say his REB is unacceptably low to consider starting at a post position except in the most extreme of circumstances.

I also think his free throw shooting is relatively unimportant.  As in RL, a guy who isn't quick, doesn't have great low post moves, and can't handle the ball very well isn't going to draw all that many fouls.  His athleticism makes him offensively relevant (ie. distro might be greater than 0 or 1 for me), but I think if you ask him to score more than 4 or 5 points a game at any point in his career he'll either be decreasing your overall offensive efficiency or your offense is really bad.

if he's a great FT shooter with a -2 and decent distro on an uptempo team he will draw fouls and average 10+ ppg, especially in D III...

ETA: I don't play DIII, so I am extrapolating based on my D II experience...

Damron's already on the team. But this helps with recruiting similar "talents" so I'm appreciative of my fellow coaches. He's a B FT shooter though.

To girt's point about rebounding, maybe a guy like Damron harasses a shooter into taking a bad shot but there's a very high probability that the guy will get his own miss and dunk it home on him...

Well that's the only way you can use him. At sf with less than 30 spd, he's gonna get destroyed by most SFs, and if the other team is smart and put a SG with 80 spd at SF, you are in big trouble. I don't see any other way of utilizing this guy besides have him guard a scoring 4 or 5, and suffer the Reb hit.

Or just not use him that much...

so much depends on potentials.

while the guy in my link  has had a great team around him, he started with single digit lp and rebounding that was at like 11 or 12... but had high high potentials and a great work ethic. i took a flyer on him as my 12th guy and figured i'd give him a year or two with a redshirt to see where he got to.

if this guy has any kind of potentials in those categories and would take a redshirt year he could have a pretty decent season or two left
