Phelan D3 NT, first round. Not my team but I was shocked to see this upset and how it happened:

Case Western has some veteran, D2 players.  I'm surprised only playing 6 they didn't get more tired, but running slowdown and 2-3 avoided both fatigue and foul trouble, apparently.  Slowdown and FG% really made the difference, but given the player ratings is it a huge shock?

It's a huge shock to me that a player can play 40min and not ever reaching tired. The Sf went for 40 min and the worst he got was "tiring." Todd Stanford with 70 stamina goes for 34 min and never got to very tired...

Slowdown and zone is a powerful weapon to combat fatigue. And I hate to tell you guys there are plenty of teams in real life who have gone whole games playing 6 players and winning.

you care to name a few? This team has pretty much played 6 players the entire season. It seems like stamina doesn't matter bc the 2 players with 70 stamina avg 32mpg is shooting .500.

Km everyone of his starters shot over 50%. Its not like his opponent was a bad team, then I'd give a pass. I'm sending in a ticket for this, because its an absolute disgrace.

It definitely happens in real life. Check out Ohio State this season.

That said, I think it's an atrocity for HD.

Looks like the Case Western coach has a system, and sometimes it works. From looking at their schedule I'd say they got lucky a bit this time and I wouldn't expect a deep run, but it seems within plausibility for this outcome to happen x out of 100 times...

ETA: Remember when everyone was ******** coz the effects of stamina were too harsh? Here's what you get for your troubles...

one player on the team shot over 50%

which isn't saying much considering they don't take 3s and lycoming played a 0 defense

almost nobody plays them -3 or 4 or 5, even though they took only something like 17 3 point shots all season.

did a quick look, they are getting pasted in the last 7 minutes of the second half from what I looked at.

they get red when they play teams that fcp.

the strategy looks like it might get you one tourny bid every 4 years, as the team is near all seniors, and nobody else develops.

Again, I don't exactly like it, but I don't exactly hate it either.

It appears the engine has gotten far less sensative to advantages deep teams might have, maybe making up for the recruit inequity in d1.  I have had some (well two monster teams lose to significantly worse, shallow teams in the NT in the past few weeks), seems like new strategies might need to be developed.

Although I don't think what we see above is a very good strategy, maybe some modification of the strategy could indeed lead to a team that wins 5 out of 10 titles in some division, but everything I have seen, the deep, highly rated teams still have an enormous advantage over the little guerilla teams and strategies out there.  To me, that is all the above example is.

I am surprised nobody has started using the two four letter words that caused so much agony a few seasons ago - i.e. coin flip!

Worked in round 2 as well. CWRU's in the Sweet 16. Hope to be able to take a crack at them...

I was trying to think of real life teams who literally had no bench, and as a St. John's fan, the 1999 team came to mind.  I knew they had no bench, but take a look at their "signature" win of that season.  In an abject blowout, five guys played 34 minutes or more:
