Was just curious whether anyone has had success running a big lineup. I messed up recruiting and so am left very light in the backcourt. Here is the starting lineup I am thinking of for next season, running a motion offense and zone defense in DIII:

Name                    Yr.     Pos.    A     SPD     RB     DE     BLK     LP     PE     BH     P    WE   ST   DU     FT     TOT
David Kraus         Jr.       PG   56         71      21      55       13      20    42      65    62    34    88    63    B    590
Larry Lawson       Jr.       SG   44         52      68      66      44       49    48      49    43    67    92    71    C    693
Jonah Caskey     So.     SF     29        41      94      40       53       76    7        27    25    90    73    94    B-   649
Lawrence Perry   Fr.       PF    40        31      75      49        55       62    28     32    25    26    65    54    D    542
Thomas Upton    Fr.        C     36        24      80      43        69       34    1       12    20    56    69    59    D    503

I'd think about using the opportunity to promise a start to a guard recruit.  That team BH/Pass will kill you.

Unfortunately, I tend to agree, but I was hopeful/curious about whether the big rebounding edge (especially at the 1-2-3) might offset that. More turnovers, to be sure, but a higher percentage of conversions (ultimately, if not on the first try) whenever the ball isn't turned over.

I'm starting to learn that if the BH/Pass of any starting lineup is very low, there isn't much that can be done that can offset that. Part of it is that a lot of coaches run the FCP, and you will get destroyed against FCP with that kind of BH/Passing.

Exhibition Game One.

Point Guard.
Shooting Guard.
Small Forward.
Power Forward.
Center.

Managed to steal the win with a late comeback. Played slow tempo to keep turnovers down (it helped I was against a zone) to 8 and dominated on the glass (29-19 rebounds; 12-5 offensive). Certainly an ugly game, and I still believe a press team might kill me, but it (sort of) worked for 1 game, anyway.

Caskey, Lawson, and Kraus would start for me.

Agreed.  I wouldn't leave any of those 3 on the bench.  I like Caskey and Lawson quite a bit.

3 OOC games in with a lineup of (natural/playing) Jose Cruz (PG/PG), Marty Manley (PF/SG), Justin Hooser (PF/SF), Thomas Upton (C/PF), Lawrence Perry (C/C). Two wins, 1 loss so far. Trying to redshirt a center, so playing only 8 guys. Kraus, Caskey, and Lawson coming off the bench, with Lawson and Caskey top 2 in minutes.

More turnover (37) than assists (35) and beaten rather easier by the best team we played so far. Still won rebounding battle in that game (30 vs 27) and had big rebounding edge in 2 wins (41 vs 26 and 35 vs 26).

Still don't think it is a recipe for long-term success, especially in NT as the good teams will beat me easily, but it allows for some "stolen" victories while I pay the penalty for recruiting SNAFUs.

And, as predicted, the good pressing team just smoked me. Box Score. 20 turnovers to 5 assists! Even winning the rebounding battle (which is impressive, considering how poorly I shot), I won't win many games with that ratio.

Good job for keeping it that close, imo.  Had the potential to be a big blowout.  We usually draw more fouls than that.  If you had a couple guys get in serious foul trouble, especially a guard, then all hell could have broke loose.

hamline playing with an 8 man roster. good thing you play the zone, any other system and your team could be looking at 0-6.

Not that it would help backcourt depth much, but if I was playing anything but zone I wouldn't be redshirting one of the high potential big men I got. Next season, come hell or high water, I'm getting a top legit PG, even if it means he's the only guy I spend $ on.

Regular season and Conference Tournament over for Hamline. Crapped the bed in the CT, but finished with an adequate record of 20-8, RPI of 39, SOS of 25. Certainly not a *good* season, but somewhat respectable given the joke that was recruiting. I think we may sneak into the NT, but will have to get lucky to do any damage there, as we'll be a low seed and any above average pressing team will smoke us.

that's a great season with these circumstances IMO

Well, I'm sure jerkstore33 at Rowan isn't thrilled to draw us in round 1 of the NT, just because we have a puncher's chance and it's a bit tougher matchup than he could have had against most #11 seeds. That said, a press team with 6 upperclassmen will certainly be a hell of a test for a big lineup.
