Last season, in exhibition, LeMoyne defeated Syracuse and Bellarmine beat Xavier.  Bellarmine had a great team, ultimately winning the DII title.

Last night, DII  No. Kentucky defeated West Virginia 77-74.  NKU wants to move to DI but needs an invitation from a conference. They're interested in Horizon (Butler) and Ohio Valley (Murray St. ).  Maybe this win will spark that invitation

According to one story, Syracuse had been practicing man-2-man for 2 weeks and had used man-2-man "more than more folks realize" in the previous season. But they had a new roster and wanted to see how effective it'd be vs. a real opponent.

I live in Syracuse and follow the team closely... I haven't seen that story, but I would have a hard time believing any of that unless it came from Boeheim himself. The only new player expected to contribute last season was Fab Melo, the other starters were either returning starters from the prior season, or in the case of Scoop Jardine and Kris Joseph, key contributors off the bench (both were nominated for/named in 6th man of the yr discussions). Boeheim does like to run m2m in early exhibitions, mostly I think to show the team they aren't great at it and need to double down on the zone...

DII Quincy, with 12 new players, defeated D1 Drake.  Quincy is in the same Great Lakes Valley Conference with Bellarmine and No. Kentucky. Bellarmine almost beat Xavier again last night, falling 77-73.   D1 schools should avoid that conference.

I think it is a good idea for a zone team to scrimmage some in man to man and maybe play some man in exhibitions to remind players of the core man defense concepts.  Much of that applies in a zone, just channelled through the structure of a zone.

there are more and more D1 teams giving up one of their exhibItions for a closed scrimmage against another D1 team.
A closed scrimmage may include a 2-3 hours in the morning and then another  3+ the same evening.    Often held at neutral locations to give both teams the feeling of a road game.
It gives the coaches multiple opportunities to work on specific game situations like trying a man defense or maybe fullcourt pressure defense or situations like being down by 2 with three seconds to go.

The president of No. Kentucky Univ., which defeated West Virginia in exhibition play this week, announced a move to Div. 1.  According to NCAA rules, they must be invited by a DI conference.  The president says he's had conversations with several conferences but the invitation is expected to come from the Ohio Valley.

Such a move  would create some natural rivals for NKU with fellow Kentucky schools Murray St., Eastern Kentucky , and Morehead.    The Ohio Valley is one of only 10 conferences that has won an NCAA game in each of the last 3 seasons.  In 2010, Murray St. defeated Vanderbilt and took Butler to the wire in the 2nd round, falling 54-52.  In 2011, Morehead upset Louisville in the opening round.

Folks acting like Syracuse never, ever plays man defense. How many times over the years have the Orange gone man when a team or player shreds the 2-3 for a half? It happens a lot more often than one would think if one watches enough Syracuse games.

In any event, if memory serves, this isn't the first time LeMoyne beat Syracuse in an exhibition. I wouldn't worry about it.

I was told that an announcement concerning NKU should come in the next few weeks.  They are attractive to conferences because of  their new arena.  They will actually save money on travel if they move to the OVC.  The downside to that conference is they do not have mens soccer.   NKU just won a D2 national title in soccer.  They would have to find an affiliation for just that sport.

I'm hoping the move sparks additional interest in the program.  I am an alum.
