Dilone is the one used the most by a wide margin. Funny thing is, I've never had him show up in a draft search. Not sure why.

1975 Gary Carter.

Joss' salary is $1.3M less than what it should be based on my calculations.  His projected era is 0.38 less than what his salary suggests; over 342 ip that equates to 14.4 runs.  Carter is salaried at $3.9M but probably should be $5.2M-- again a $1.3M difference.  I am not completely sure about projected RC, but performance histories do, suggest Carter's projected worth has a 14 run surplus.  Carter, like Joss has no real weakness-- he is a standout defensive player and an acceptable offensive one too.

To me there are only two real non pitching "cookies" 75 Carter and 89 HoJo Because there are no other suitable replacements in their price range with their all around abilities. Dilone and Bip Roberts are in the conversation,  especially Bip because of his defensive versatility, but It's easy to find suitable replacements if you look hard enough for Bip and Dilone. I always get a kick out of seeing people bat Dilone leadoff, which a lot of people do.  You greatly reduce his worth when you can easilly find someone with his OBP(doesn't walk much) and lack of defensive qualities and atbats elsewhere. I wonder if 75 Carter and 89 Hojo's salaries are being determined by their Primary positions. I'm sure a veteran owner here knows.  As an OF only, Gary Carter probably is priced about right, and HoJo at 3B exclusively, although I couldn't  live with the almost 30 errors a season,  would be valued closer to his price also.
You are right about Dilone-- he shouldn't be used at lead off and there are much better options for less $/ip.  Anybody who thinks '89 HoJo is a value, doesn't put the proper value on defense, IMO.  Yes, it seems that player's salaries (with a few of exceptions) are based off of where they actually played instead of where you can play them.

Most of us are imitators, rather than innovators. Crazy Stengel showed us an excellent anti-Joss strategy, zubinsum showed us excellent defensive analysis, and we may observe many examples of "outside the box" thinking which produces championships. Much of this simply glances off our skulls. I include myself. There are many undiscovered bargains, many unexploited strategies, many different ways to do well in this game. Dealing with cancer has given me time to work on things, which, looking at the results of my teams, hasn't always shown me to be a smart as I would like to think that I am. the journey, nevertheless, is pleasant and fruitful.

I agree that Joss and Carter are the only pure cookies in the sense that they are just wrong priced in the SIM.  Each should be priced over $1 million higher.  There are a lot of players like Bip Roberts, Miguel Dilone, Omar Vizquel, Carney Lansford and HoJo who overperform offensively in the SIM but their defensive shortcomings and/or low number of PA's argue against increasing their price significantly.  I don't think anyone believes that Miguel Dilone and Carney Lansford should cost $5.5 million or HoJo $6 million or Willie McGee $8 million unless you want to "tax" them out of popularity as cookies like Pinky May (how quickly we forget) or Tony Phillips, which is a separate discussion.

I have read compelling posts arguing that Mordecai Brown `08 should cost about $1 million more as well, but I don't really know how to do the ERA projections well enough to know whether this is true.

And let's not forget Charlie Hickman and Pinky Hargrave, whose prices should probably be increased by the largest percentage amount in the SIM (50-100%) to reflect their true value.
