I didn't like the plan from the beginning, so I offer up my realignment solution.
32 teams, 2 conferences, 4 divisions per conference
Eastern Conference
Northeast Division:
Boston
Montreal
New York Rangers
New York Islanders
Great Lakes Division:
Columbus
Toronto
Buffalo
Ottawa
Atlantic Division:
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
New Jersey
Washington
Southeast Division:
Tampa
Florida
Carolina
Nashville
Western Conference
Canadian Division:
Vancouver
Edmonton
Calgary
Winnipeg
Central Division:
Chicago
Minnesota
St. Louis
Detroit
Pacific Division:
San Jose
Seattle
Anaheim
Los Angeles
Southwest Division:
Colorado
Dallas
Phoenix
Salt Lake City
Winning the division would only guarantee a playoff spot, not a top 4 playoff spot. The other 4 playoff teams would be decided by point totals, and seedings would depend entirely on point totals.
