I have posted this same question the last few years about this time of the season. 

Which of these players, if any, will make the Hall of Fame?  I'm not suggesting that any of them will or won't - I'm just throwing out a list of names.  I'm not asking if they would make it if their career ended today but instead, look into your crystal ball and tell me if they will finish with a career good enough and end up in the Hall of Fame.

I would say only Chipper and Vizquel are locks.  The other three have alot of work to do.

FWIW, I think Cano could be on that list.  He has 1300 hits in the midst of his 8th season.  He is 29yo and really hitting his stride.  1700 hits over the course of the next 12years is certainly possible.

I wouldn't vote for Vizquel, but he might make it.

Pettitte, Hudson and Damon will probably all get some significant support, but none of them feel like HOF to me. 

Of course, there's a number of other active players who are obviously HOFers who are not on this list.  And I agree that Cano is on pace for the HOF.

Vizquel as a lock??? I don't think he should make it.  He was considered very good defensively but he was significantly below average offensively his entire career with the exception of 2 seasons.

God I am tired of hearing about WAR.  I love stats and number like the next guy, but come on.  What is baseball about?  Winning?  Getting hits?  Playing defense? Driving in runs?  

If it's all about Wins, then Ted Williams sucked.

If it's about batting average, Mike Schmidt sucked.

If it's about Defense, Tony Gywnn sucked.

If it's about RBI, then Joe Morgan sucked.

Would someone please tell me, is baseball a real game played by real people that make (or do not ) make plays?  The goal of a hitter is to get on base, the goal of a pitcher and defense is to get hitters out.  Can we go back to judging players based on this criteria.  You cannot control who you play for, who you play with, what era you play in, injuries and plain old luck.

If Vizquel's HOF case rests entirely on his defense (and it does), we need to evaluate that defense somehow.  Yeah he won gold gloves, but everybody knows that gold gloves aren't the best indicators of great defense.

WAR incorporates defense.  If Vizquel was anywhere near Smith defensively, their WARs would be much closer.  But they aren't.
