the value of minor league playoffs? Topic

I have a decision to make on a prospect- a guy is ripping up AA and I want to get him onto AAA, the only problem is that the AA team has a bunch of other good guys also and is in a playoff race, and the AAA team is near the bottom.  Thus, the question is- what would be the consequence of having that AA team miss the playoffs because they no longer have their best player?  Do playoff teams get attribute boosts because of the extra games played? If so, that player wouldn't be getting that boost and neither would his teammates so I don't want to cut off my nose to spite my face.  Thoughts?

You want to maximize the number of games your ML prospects play.  So if you were to promote him from an opportunity to play additional games to a team that will be done after game 144, you are doing him a disservice.

If his AA teammates are just minor league roster-filler who will never sniff the majors, then you don't need to worry about them.  They're all throw-aways in the long run.

I already said, "...the AA team has a bunch of other good guys also", there's at least 3 other definite ML prospects on that squad. The guy I'm looking to promote had been drafted one year earlier than the other 3 guys (and is the best out of all 4 players) so it's time to move the one guy up.  It would be best for the one player to get him closer to the majors but it could be bad for all four if the AA team misses the playoffs.

The question is do minor league players get a development boost for being in minor league playoffs/championships and if so, is it because they are winners or is it simply because they play more games?

Keep him there and promote him after the minor league playoffs so he gets more games under his belt. You still may get a promotion bump.

Because they play more games.  Winning/losing has nothing directly to do with it, although you obviously have to win each series to be able to play more games.

It depends on how important you think playing time is.   And how much an extra 50 AB plays into the equation.   I used to insist on 1200 minor league PA before calling up a player.   200 his rookie season, 450 in each of the next two.   1100.    If I wanted to call him up at 1200, maybe I'd get that extra hundred in the playoffs those first three seasons.

It's a good question, but I don't think anybody knows the answer to this.

More playing time is supposed to help development. So is better coaching.

If we assume your AAA coaches are better than your AA coaches, is it better to have a prospect in AAA for 1/4 of season and no playoffs or AA for the entire season and 1 or 2 rounds of playoffs?

For better or worse, WIS doesn't give this level of input on how the game works. And you'd have to run hundreds of tests before you'd likely get a significant result.

If I had to pick an answer, I'd answer it doesn't really matter. At most, it would be a 1 point difference in about 1/2 the categories. Not going to matter much in how the player performs.

I though the "Promtions bump" was just an up to date snap shoot of his skills.

Right, but that does not tell us anything. It could be like that for every player. And you get the update look at the guy you promote.

I guess the thing to track would be the size of the jump they got in the off season. That late look at there number could be 30% of the off season bonus. Or it could even bee a real bonus.

With the exception of injuries:

Skill ratings don't improve/regress in the offseason, they only improve/regress in-season.

Likewise, physical rating only improve/regress during the offseason, they do not improve/regress in-season.

Interesting thoughts. The AA team is currently in the middle of a long stretch of key divisional games... I will probably promote the Player once I stretch out the lead for the bye and let the other prospects figure things out in the playoffs without Him.

Why would you want a bye in the minor league playoffs?   No playing time with a bye.
