walkon penalty? Topic

I have read in some of these posts about a walkon penalty. What is it, what does it do, and how does it work?

if you have more than 2 walkons (or maybe even a tiny penalty for 2, i can't remember which it is), there is a small practice penalty - your guys will improve a bit more slowly. that is all.

if you have too many walkons on your team practice isn't as efficient. Technically it begins with 1 walkon, but the effects at 1 are nearly insignificant, growing slightly to 2 walkons and etc and becoming more pronounced once you get over 3 or so...

Take a look at my Providence team improvements this season (CT just ended); thats with 4 walkons! imagine if there wasnt a "penalty"!

I think playing your 7 guys into the ground offset any penalty MMT. If you have those minutes spread over 9-10 guys the improvement might have been lower even tho the penalty would have been less.

i agree with this. there basically is no penalty for walkons, the walkon penalty should not be a factor in the recruiting of anyone, ever :)

the real penalty for walkons is less depth and experience, that is the real consideration.

I understand doing this for ineligibles, but why for walkons?

It's been argued on here previously that any penalty that exists for 3+ walkons is basically eliminated by the increased playing time each of the remaining folks on the roster receives during that season. I don't even think about it other than, as was said earlier, the depth and player rotation headaches it can create during the season.

only game reason i can think of is that they suck and wont play and have little improvement generally but if they go ineligible (by failing) it hurts your reputation slightly.

Can walkons flunk out? I've never given them a single minute of SH.

Well it looks like im divulging secrets/showing my hand a bit here, but I was told that having walkons practice can potentially stunt the growth of your scholarship players so I put them at all SH...there's really no reason not to

Has anyone ever tried to compete by intentionally bringing on walk ons and trying to form a team of them? Maybe at the D3 level? Could be an interesting experiment... 5 walk on starters and 7 bench recruits?

Sorry, that's not competing.  That's just sadomasochism.

One time, I want a walk on with all high potentials. And a 1 WE. Just to spice things up. I'd probably say eff it and keep him on the team. Redshirt him and see what happens
