We need 3 owners for a Diamond Legends or Career Progressive League which started in 1961 and will soon be advancing to the 1970 (it's 9th) season. Details on the teams available will be provided in the following post.

In the Diamond Legends (or Career) WIS leagues, players use their average career statistics. In this specific league, that will mean using their average career statistics in a progressive from their first year of eligibility starting in 1961 through their last year of WIS eligibility. In this league, Don Sutton (whose rookie season of WIS eligibility was 1966) will be eligible every season from 1966-1988-no IR seasons !!

The league has 16 teams, Alternate WIS format E (4 teams make playoffs) No DH,No WW, No AAA, No injuries. General Managers must be deal with a salary cap of $80 million. Owners must use the actual ballpark used by their franchise in 1970.

Annual drafts will be in inverse order of finish except that for the first round only there will be a random weighted lottery among the 4 teams with the worst record (4 chances for the team with the worst record, 3 chance for 2nd worst etc.). The tiebreaker will be run differential (runs scored less runs allowed) with the team with the worst run differential drafting higher.

The first team available is the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies won their division title in 1968 and lost to my own St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS.

In 1969, after 88 games the Phillies are 44-44, tied for the NLE division lead. The league is extremely well balanced with the best record being 50-35 and the worst record being 39-49. Three divisions are very competitive with no team being more than 7 games behind the division leader, with the ALE as an exception as the Baltimore Orioles (53-35) lead by 10 games.

The Phillies had 2 players retire after the 1969 season (1B Dick Stuart and P Camilo Pscual). The amount of salary available for draft picks will be $6,918,986 plus the salaries of any players cut. There are 74 games still left in the 1969 season and it is difficult to predict where the Phillies will draft as at this time only 3 teams have records more than 3 games worse than the Phillies and only 2 teams have records more than 3 games better than the Phillies, so they could draft anywhere from 4th to 14th !

Following are the batting statistics for the Phillies 11 returning hitters for the 1970 season:

Clearly the Phillies primary needs are for a catcher, 1B or SS (Ernie Banks has been playing SS), and a 4th starting pitcher. Some players probably should be cut to free up additional salary room for the primary needs.

Interested owners will be given access to the league's private forum, which will soon have preliminary lists of available players (including 1970 rookies and previous undrafted players but NOT including any 1969 cuts), and a table of 1970 pre-cut roster totals and pre-cut available funds for draft picks for all 16 teams.

Please indicate your interest below and/or site-mail me with any questions you may have about the career format.

If you want to be in an extremely competitive league with an opportunity to show your drafting and managerial; skills, this is an excellent league for you.

Try the career format progressive-an interesting change from the regular format. No IR seasons, no bad seasons for your players

The second tem available is the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates current record is 38-54 and they will likely be a lottery team for the first round of the draft (the 4 teams with the worst record are in a weighted lottery for the first round only) and will likely be drafting first in subsequent rounds. The Pirates had 2 players retire after 1969 and have $7,411,892 available for draft picks plus the salaries of any players cut.

Preliminary available player lists are now posted in the league's private forum.

This is an extremely well balanced league-only 2 teams are more than 7 games above .500 and only 2 teams are more than 7 games below .500.

The Pirates are 19 games below .500 and will probably have the #1 draft pick, the Phillies on the other hand currently lead their division by 1 game with 67 games left in 1969.
6/1/2015 1:54 PM
A third team just became available, the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics won their division title in 1968 and so far in 1969 have a record of 49-48, 2nd in the division only 1 game behind the Chicago White Sox. There are 12 teams with records between 50-47 and 45-52 so it is difficult to predict where the A's will draft.

The Athletics have been taken

The Athletics had only 1 player retire after 1969 so will have only $1,213,645 available for draft picks before any cuts.

The Athletics will need to cut at least 1 or 2 players to have money available for the 1970 draft. The pitching staff is very strong, there are a couple of weak spots in the lineup. Note that Tony Perez plays 3B and Orlando Cepeda plays the OF.

OK, only the Phillies are left. Their record is currently 57-52 and they lead the NLE by 3 games with 53 to go.

Phillies current record is 60-55 and they still lead the NLE by 3 games.
