In a 2-3 zone which are the most important defensive attributes for a C and PF?
I know the C gets calculated by himself but I am curious if SB is more important than DEF in his position.
This is my guess:
C: SB, REB
PF: DEF, ATH

REB/SB

I used to think SB was very important...but I have seen some zone teams do really well with no great shot blockers so Im starting to wonder how important it really is.

I would think a Center in a 2/3 that had a REB/DE/SB of, say 90/80/70 would be better than a Center with ratings of 90/70/80....right?

Center in a 2-3 is the best place for one of those extreme rebound and shot blocking types. That doesn't necessarily mean they do better in that spot than a more balanced low post defender (I have suspicions, but no data). But it is clearly (to me) the place where a low-for-his-level defense rating hurts the least. They are less likely to get torched, and less likely to foul out than other sets, including 3-2. So if he has skills you really want - usually rebounding and low post - using him as the center in a 2-3 can be a good way to minimize his shortcomings.

SB is difference between a good team and great team in zone.

Defense is still more important than block for a center in 2-3 but not by much. For defensive purposes I value def/sb/ath at something like 40/35/25.

The shot blocking rating in a 2-3 zone is getting way over hyped here. This is a bit of a stretch, but at the very least it may make a difference of .3 to .5 blocks per game. That's a difference of 1 block shot every 2 games. And even then, there is no guarantee that same team will end up getting the ball. In all 3 divisions in Phelan, no player averaged more than 2 blocks per game and we're probably talking about over 1,000 teams. So how much of a difference can shot blocking really make in a 2-3 zone? Also, another point, in a 2-3(ahem I mean 2-2-1), the 1 center that is playing back is probably taking blocks away from the other players, because it's in fact a 2-2-1. So just because the center may get more blocks in a 2-3 zone, doesn't mean his team overall is getting more blocks.

Oh Shot blocking. I would have just said BLK....just like it's listed. Had me quite confused.

Very few people understand zone. I made mistakes early by taking advice on zone from users who don't play zone.

Just because a shot isn't officially "blocked" doesn't mean the defensive player in question didn't alter the shot and cause the opponent to miss. Don't take stats so literally.

I disagree with it not being important. The SB rating also affects opponents FG% because it alters shots in the lane, which obviously doesn't show up in the box score.

And there you have it. C in zone plays the part of "disrupter".

I wouldn't ignore DEF, because you can't just ignore core ratings, but SB is as important. Maybe more so. It's tough to quantify.

I was aware that a high block rating gave you the ability to alter shots. However, since it doesn't show up in the box score, is there any evidence shot blocking is that much more important in a zone compared to a man to man? I would say it's a nice luxury to have, as long as you aren't sacrificing any other skill.
