Inform Of Redshirt - No competition Topic

If I am recruiting a player, with no other teams currently looking at him.. If I inform him of my plans to redshirt, it will technically negatively effect my chances. If I'm the only one looking at him, my chances of signing will still be 100%, given nobody else looks at him, correct? Or, is it the case that he will refuse to sign with me altogether if I inform him of redshirt?

Depends. If the recruit isn’t interested in a redshirt from you, he will no longer consider signing with you. I think that happens when informed of a redshirt is used for a recruit that is in a higher division pool than your current team. It doesn’t matter how many other schools he may be considering.

Honestly I would not recommend informing a recruit of a redshirt. I have heard from multiple coaches that the action is broken. I have also experienced it first hand. You are better off trying to redshirt them when the season starts.

I agree. After being burned multiple times by the redshirt recruiting tool, I've given up even attempting to use it.

if the recruit doesn't have "wants to play" preference, I'd assume he'd be fine taking the redshirt once you sign him. But if he has the preference of "wants to play", I've had less luck getting them to accept it without a WE drop. It's not a 100% either way (I don't think). But those are things I've noticed along the way

it depends on the player

some players will react more negatively to inform of RS than others

to some degree, that is part of their programmed personality

it also in my experience depends on how good the player is and how your program is ranked - if the guy is thrilled to hear from you - think a one star hearing from an A+ prestige - he is more likely to accept the RS - if the kid is a stretch for you - think a four star hearing from a B-prestige - the inform of RS is more likely to bother him

think about those variables

think also about how much effort you have in him - if you think just barely enough to get his interest, then the inform button is more likely to cause trouble - if plenty of effort, less risk

I put 80 APs and the Redshirt into a player that had nobody on the considering list. I am still at 0% for unlocking anything...and nobody is on the considering list. If you slap a RS on a recruit and he doesn't like it, you are toast.

The only time it makes sense to inform of a redshirt is if you don’t want the player on your team without one. If you would just remove the redshirt if he gets mad, don’t bother informing. You’re more likely to get him to accept once he’s on campus, *especially* if you’re D2 or D3 team recruiting up a level or two.

That's exactly right. The only way I would sign that DI guy for my DII school was if he sat out. He said no, so screw him.

I have only had success with informing of redshirt when recruiting a player of the same division that my school is in. So it’s really only been useful for me in D1 and completely useless when coaching D3.

in my experience, better to get him considering you first and THEN tag the redshirt along with some added effort at the same ime

Probably true. I was just experimenting. I'd rather have the resources for next season anyway since he was so marginal.

Highest success rate is to already have the scholly offered THEN inform him of redshirt. Get him to love you first before screwing him for a year

This is a different redshirt related question, so I figured I'd just keep it on this thread. I just redshirted an incoming freshman who sent me the unhappy email, and his WE dropped 5 points. Is there any risk of him transferring or not reaching full potential or anything else? I figure with only a 5 point drop, it's probably still worth keeping the redshirt on him.

I had a guy lose 6 and he didn't go anywhere.

Just don’t play the kid & then offer him the redshirt around game 22, he’ll be thrilled you want to redshirt him.
